Not sure of those records. I know they went 3 straight years, winning 2 I believe. Hard to compare across eras though. 95% winning % for this group of seniors.

the 78 senior class won 46 out of a possible 52 games...2 state championships...one runner-up

That's an 88% winning %.

1975 9-3 (though I don't know if you can count this because in that era few freshmen played)

 

1976 12-2 State Runner-up

1977 12-1 State Champ

1978 13-0 State Champ

 

Just taking the three above: That's 37-3 and 2 State Titles. 92% I guess.

 

As for comparing eras, it's not that hard if you realize they played fewer games and were in a 4 Class System and playing AA in that 4 Class system.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a rematch of this game next year in the finals, which will hopefully be a competitive game if it does happen. Williamsburg loses only 1 starter, so they should be the favorite out of the East and Mayfield is basically there every year.

I have to give props to W-Burg for not appearing to quit playing.

 

For those who were there or even watched online.

 

I.M.O. this one showed that W-Burg needs to hit the weights 100% more than they have been.

I've said this for the past several weeks. This is the most overachieving Mayfield team I've seen. They didn't have the great breakaway RB, didn't have the speed or size of some of the past teams, but, all they did was line up week in and week out and beat the heck out of teams, against probably the toughest schedule they've played in the last 5 years. Only 5 of Mayfield's 15 opponents weren't ranked at the time they played them and 1 of those(5a Graves Co) ended up being ranked later in the year. Tremendous season for the Cards and a great day to be a Cardinal fan.

As I read your post I think of one thing - championships are more often than not won at the line of scrimmage. That is often overlooked by people. This Mayfield team proves the value of the guys in the trenches.

Mayfield will still be pretty good next year, but, they lose a lot this year. The majority of the line graduates, they lose there QB, RB, best WR and the majority of there defense. Plus, you've had Luke and Jake Guhy at QB for the past 6 years and those guys could throw the ball. It's not going to be easy to replace that position with another that could throw the ball so well. The ability to throw and run the ball equally well these past few years has been a big reason for there success. It'll be interesting to see what they do next year. I do know Beechwood has some great classes coming up and were young this year, Frankfort returns almost everyone, Russellville will still be good, so, it'll be a challenge just to make it back to the title game next year.

Also, congrats to Williamsburg, there is nothing to hang our heads over, you were beaten by a great football program and all other 1A schools in the state, including my beloved Raceland Rams would have loved to been in this game.

Been a lot of talk about reconfiguring. I know its about better competition. But I like the 6 classes simply because it allows more teams to go further in the playoffs. I think its good for the game. Want better competition - Stop scheduling Johnny Lunch-bucket and start putting better teams on your regular season schedule. I think its really helped Desales this year.
