Back up your "fact" by telling me how many Div I athletes have strictly an academic scholarship, and not an athletic scholarship, that actually will see playing time. What I am saying that it has now become a combination. It's a bonus to have the grades and the athletic ability, so kids are taking high school sports a lot more seriously than "just for fun".

When my son graduated from Ryle there were maybe 25 students who got full rides for academics. I think there was 1 for football. I think TOG is saying you can get a great education at Boone County Schools. And getting a good education should be your first priority. At least that's the way I am reading it.

I agree with this...there are many more students on academic scholarships than athletic scholarships. Very few students get full ride athletic scholarships.

More students get academic money. More athletes certainly are getting athletic aid, not even close.

I think it's a bad thing too, but was asking because as a coach, especially one already at a school, wouldn't you weigh all your options?

 

The money may be more, but you would also have to look at your chances at success if that is your main goal.

 

Some may use schools in Boone co as a stepping stone to make a name for themselves and hope to move on to a bigger school with better chance at success, but for an already well established coach I would think some of the restrictions could be a hinderance in some coaches minds.

 

Name the last Boone coach that did this. Rick Thompson stayed over 15 years, Bryson Warner was forced out after 10 years, Trosper isn't going anywhere and neither is Borchers. The open/closed district debate is comical. In 2006 Ryle made it to the Title game and in 2010 they beat Highlands and played Trinity very tough. In 2011, Boone was a point away from playing for a state title. In 2012, Cooper played for a state title. Pretty impressive for a district that is so handicapped by being a closed district.

My kid is getting close to 50k in scholarships and grants per year, all academic , to play football at a DIII school.

There are only a few in NKY this year that have accepted full ride athletic scholarships at D1 schools. The majority of athletes that go on to play at the next level will be with the aide of academic scholarships and grants more than anything else.

As I've stated previously I have no clue if Dave did or not express interested in Ryle. Again, I would understand if he did.

So true. Could you imagine the negative feedback a coach would get if he admitted to applying to another school and if he didn't get it? People think parents are rough on coaches as it is, how do you think the CCH faithful would react to coach Wirth if he said he applied but didn't get it and came back to CCH?

 

There is a reason why coaches and those involved in the process keep it close to wraps.

We're getting off track. I was simply saying high school sports are no longer being played "just for fun". The kids are putting just as much effort into their sports as they do in their academics. At least the ones that want it bad enough.

 

As far as the IVY leagues and Military Academies, they don't even offer athletic scholarships, so you would exclude them from the denominator in OG's fact based statement.

There was a rumor in the late-90's/early-00's when Max Montoya was coaching at Beechwood that Montoya was bringing on Sam Wyche to help coach the Tigers. .....we all see where that went.
