Some basketball games are unwatchable. There were 108 free throw attempts in the Morehead vs. Marshall game.

Home team is going to get more whistles; period. There is a pay-site schools subscribe to with referees stats and, on average, across the board, they call 1.4 fouls per game more on the away team. It is human nature.

 

That said, Cleveland State lost the game because they lost their composure in the last 5 minutes. There was a stretch when UK got it under 10 where Cleveland State turned it over 3 or 4 trips in a row -- that isn't on the refs. They took at least two ill-advised contested threes in that same stretch, so again, that isn't on the refs.

 

Cleveland State lost because they played with nothing to lose for 35 minutes and then played not to lose the last 5. Period.

How hard is it for these kids? Take your worst habits you had for 10 years and tell yourself, "I'm going to change these habits." Then do it.

 

That is what these guys are having to do, and its really hard. They're having to change habits.

 

I want you to think of every time you have the urge to do the bad habit again. it's hard. It no different in basketball.

 

We are miles away right now but we are moving in the right direction. This is one of the best groups of young people I have ever coached

 

I wish we were farther along that we are, but that's on me. I love these kids.

You mean the one where Harrison was waiting for about 2 seconds with his feet set, outside the circle, and still didn't get the call? Yeah, that was a gem.

 

I agree, the second defender charge seems to have been thrown out the window.

 

Yeah that one. I usually don't gripe about block/charge calls because as a previous official of lower level basketball, I know it can be tough. But that one was ridiculous.

You can only hope that a coach does not have to lecture his kids about not pressing send. Though I understand it is necessary because you are still dealing with 18-22 year old young men. But to have an assistant coach say something like this is flat out stupid and embarrassing.

 

And for the record, I would have been frustrated as well if I was a Cleveland State fan. A couple of calls did really hurt their chances. But it was not the reason they lost the game.

I only saw the last 8 minutes or so of the game (lucky me, right?). The only call I saw against Cleveland St. that was questionable IMO was WCS getting fouled going for a rebound. The Cleveland St. player had inside position and it looked like WCS reached over him for the rebound but the Cleveland St. player got called for the foul. I can't recall anything else in that time, and that was during UK's big run at the end that won the game so I don't see how anyone can say the officials gave the game to UK.

I think the refs swallowed the whistle some at the end but can you tell me what series it seemed so blatant? I thought the "block-charge" call vs. UK was pretty atrocious and helped Cleveland State significantly. I just thought it was kind of even on bad night. Seemed to me that there was a lot of hacking on the inside by both sides that was ignored.

Pretty much how I see it.

 

Cleveland State was averaging 24.6 personal fouls per game entering last night. They committed 28 fouls against UK.

I'm already tired of people complaining about the refs. It's simple, stop putting your hands on guys. It's always been a foul, they've just buckled down and started to enforce it this year. Teams have known this was a point of emphasis since before the season began. If they haven't adjusted, that's just bad coaching.
