My company only let's us off half day on Christmas Eve and not at all on New Year's Eve. Maybe I will lobby for a new law.

I do think it's a fair question because of the way it was presented . We have areas that have blue laws today so obviously a locale can legislate stores being closed.

 

My opinion is that you let the market decide.

I've already decided to boycott shopping for Christmas in retail stores. Plain and simple - I've had too many dinner's rushed and people stressed. Retail stores have lost my holiday money-period.

I think it's kind of sad but you won't see me at any of those stores on Thursday.

I worked in retail for many years before getting out about 5 years ago (best decision I ever made). And while I hated working those days, stores are open for a reason....because people shop. While it sounds like many of us don't like to go, there are many, many more that do. And if people keep coming, they stores will keep opening. It's not fair to categorize stores as greedy just because they are trying to make more money/profit....that's the reason they are even in business to begin with, right??

They have a choice of where they apply for a job. Some places it's known, you are going to work those days.

I see all angles of it. It is easy to say, "well, just don't work there" or "don't work that day", it does not exactly work like that and every person knows that. With a saturated job market, other commitments, and fixed incomes, it is tough to swing things for a lot of people. If you are a single parent with a child, maybe you have no objections to working on Thanksgiving, but that is not exactly a prime day to drop off the kid at the daycare or babysitter's house. For as liberal as I am with social things, I truly believe a big problem with America is the eradication of family values, for lack of a better term (now I sound like Sean Hannity :lol2:). Thanksgiving is no longer a holiday, but just a commercialized mess. Which as a capitalist I am cool with as well; hence, why I can see all angles of it. Ideally I wish a time restriction could be placed in that maybe stores could not open until 1:00 p.m. I am not necessarily advocating for that, but I could see the value in it. Or maybe requiring it to paid as OT until a certain time of the day.

Everybody has a choice. It's the great thing about America. And again, anytime you don't like a policy your employer has should the government come in and make law about it?

Its not like retail is the only area that has to work. I have a great job in my opinion making plenty of money, but my place of work isnt closed for Thanksgiving. The way i look at it is the companies are paying their employees time and a half or more, so a lot of people use holidays as a way to be able to pay the bills easier. Id have a problem with this is they werent paid some kind of holiday pay, but im fairl certain almost everybody is. Theres a ton of proffesions that dont get off for holidays, so I dont really feel sorry for retail. Id love to spend time with my family on all holidays, but providing for my family is more important to me than spending one day with them. Maybe thats just my blue collar thinking. I dont know.

Exactly. If it's anybody's fault that stores are open on Thanksgiving, it's the customers.

You can't get customers to leave on Christmas Eve, we ended up every year escorting a few to the front and forcing them to checkout and leave.

 

That's true...we always hired off duty police officer to watch the store from closing Christmas Eve until workers came in at midnight on Christmas night, they say it's crazy how many people will pull up, park, the entire family will get out and go up trying to get in the store on Christmas Day...even though the entire parking lot is empty.

 

When I was a Store Manager I actually had a guy come to my house on Christmas Day. When I answered the door he asked if I was the store manager and then ask me to open the store because he needed a few things. After explaining why I could/would not open the store I found out that all he needed was batteries and didn't want to pay $2 more for them at Speedway!

 

People will even try to shop at stores with no fixtures or merchandise in them..."If you build it they will come...and never want to leave."
