Exactly. If it's anybody's fault that stores are open on Thanksgiving, it's the customers.

they say it's crazy how many people will pull up, park, the entire family will get out and go up trying to get in the store on Christmas Day...even though the entire parking lot is empty.

 

I had a former boss who used to be the number 2 at the Jacobson's in Louisville. Numerous times people would walk up to the doors and shake them hard enough to set off the alarm. He would have to go meet the police at the store.

 

When I was a Store Manager I actually had a guy come to my house on Christmas Day. When I answered the door he asked if I was the store manager and then ask me to open the store because he needed a few things. After explaining why I could/would not open the store I found out that all he needed was batteries and didn't want to pay $2 more for them at Speedway!

 

I am not a violent person but there are some people who need a good hard kick in the butt and that guy would be one of them.

Fortunately, we don't have Black Friday sales in Mayberry.

Yeah when we used to close the stores and they were not 24 hour, this happened to me often.

To answer the original question. No, I don't think they should be STOPPED. I do wish in my laid back Mayberry wannabe kinda world, that folks would CHOOSE not to participate. But I definitely don't want any aspect of government telling Mr./Mrs./corporate store owner when they can or can't unlock their door and turn the lights on for business.

Fortunately, we don't have Black Friday sales in Mayberry.

I don't think it's a greed issue with stores. I think it's a priority issue with ourselves.

Agreed. The stores are in a battle to put the biggest carrot out there, in order to get the shopping season's money. So, they're all in a battle to try and one-up the competition. Which was all fine and dandy, when you're letting your product/price speak for itself. But, then it got to be about who's going to be first. Instead of midnight, it became 9pm...then 6pm...and so on and so on. They lure you in with limited quantities of those "doorbuster" savings, knowing full well that even if they run out, you'll probably end up buying something else (probably with a higher markup), since you're already there.

 

And most people are gullible enough to fall for it. So the trend continues.

They have a choice of where they apply for a job. Some places it's known, you are going to work those days.

 

That is correct. My example would be the company that has now decided to start opening on federal holidays after most of its employees have been with that company 5-10-15+ years. Just makes it a little difficult on the families.

I agree - the stores started opening earlier and earlier. It is the 'competition' of each business (they don't want any other store to out do them in sales). Customers want to shop? Great - BTW - the little bit of "holiday pay" made by the average worker is not even noticeable in their paycheck. This is why everyone has gotten out of retail sales this year. Quality of life for yourself and your family.
