I had really hoped that it wasn't serious but since it is I will try to give my opinion.

 

In short, NO, we should not have laws against it. If you don't want to shop on Thanksgiving then don't. If you don't want to work on Thanksgiving then don't. And to say everyone is appalled just isn't true. I couldn't give a rats butt if you have to work on a holiday. Nor do I have any intentions of standing in a line to get in best buy in hopes I get 1 of the 2 of the 60" tvs they have on sale for $1.99. And it's asinine to even entertain the thought that laws should be passed to stop retail businesses from opening when ever the heck they please.

FWIW I agree with you for the most part. Maybe saying Everyone is appalled was a bit over the top, should have said many are appalled.

 

As for the "If you don't want to work on Thanksgiving, then don't", you must live in a magical world where jobs are plentiful and easy to find and you can just come and go as you please at the place of your employment.

 

I would hate for there to be a law on this also, I was just trying to get a conversation on Blue Laws.

If they are still going to the sales, then they (whoever it may be) has no reason to be complaining about it. They can stop going, or shut up about it.

For someone with low job skills, not very realistic. If their employer schedules them to work on Thanksgiving and they don't, they are very easy to replace because the job does not require high job skills.

I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving or at the butt crack of down on Black Friday because I think it is too much on employees and I try to spread my views to as many people as possible. Saying that, I also do not think the government should interfer with it from a legislative aspect. Now, if local mayors, governors or the president want to get on TV and "shame" retailers for working their employees on holidays and encourage shoppers to not shop during those time frames, I am all for that.

Not all are low Job skills but many have been in positions long enough to be making $35-$45K per year just clocking in and out everyday, hard to replace jobs that pay that much in current economy in many communities.

I do too, but for a different reason. I refuse to let the stores dictate not only what product I'm going to give as a gift, but at what time I'm going to have to get it, in order to get it on sale. Each Christmas, I have a general idea of what I'm giving as gifts that year, and have an approximate budget set forth for each item. So, while it would be nice to get it at half price or something, I will not be getting up and sitting/standing on a cold sidewalk at 4am to do it (and even then, not be guaranteed that they'll have enough in stock when I finally get in.) So instead, I will look for (and usually find) the items that I want, in the weeks before/after Black Friday, even if it means paying a little more. In fact, I find myself more and more doing a good portion of my shopping online. Many places offer free/reduced shipping, which saves me not only the time of traveling to the store and walking the aisles, but also the cost of the gas to get there and back.

I think it's kind of sad but you won't see me at any of those stores on Thursday.

I dont like how the stores try to make you choose between longer family visits and buying at lower prices.

 

I do go to Black Friday, but choose family on Thursday. Plus thats when the Dallas Cowboys play, who dont want to watch that.

 

And I wouldnt feel like doing anything on Thursday after I commit one of the deadly sins of Gluttony.

I see nothing wrong with it, the more sales and compeition the better.

If there wasn't a market for it (meaning people that are going to shop then) they wouldn't do it. You don't like, it don't go if enough people don't go it will stop. You don't want to work on a holiday don't take a job somewhere you might have to. Simple solution.

Businesses would not be open extended hours unless a demand was present. If people will come they will be open.

 

I personally gave up Black Friday shopping a couple of years ago when two women were wanting to "kick my rear" over an Xbox. One even asked me if I wanted to take it outside. How emabarrasing would have been to have lost my X-box and gotten my butt kicked.

I think it is sad that Thanksgiving has been reduced to a sales event. I don't & won't shop on Thanksgiving. I will spend my time cooking and with my family reflecting on being thankful. As far as Black Friday goes I don't shop then because I don't think its fun to get up before dawn & stand in line(I hate lines) but if that is what float your boat fine. I believe it's a good idea if enough people stop shopping on Thanksgiving then it will stop. It probably won't be too long before some in upper retail management will lock in Wed as a pre-Thanksgiving sales day.

It has become to some just another thanksgiving tradition. I see no problem with it. It actually does get more people to spend time together. I know some who go together every year and do it as another tradition.

 

I personally never went to black fri shopping at midnight. But I may go out thanksgiving night at 8.

I refuse to shop on Thanksgiving. In my opinion the retail stores are getting more greedy every year around Thanksgiving to get the all mighty dollar. I can understand a person working in the medical field having to work (happened my family for years). It reached the point in our household that Thanksgiving was very hard to celebrate at all due to the work schedules on Thanksgiving and the weekend following. Grocery stores don't need to be open on Thanksgiving. Retail stores don't need to be open either. It's very hard to celebrate the day when one person gets off at 2:00pm, one gets off at 5:00pm and the other has to be to work at 6:00pm for the great "sales". Lets just cancel Thanksgiving. We don't need the holiday anymore. Let's all just work a ten-twelve hour shift that day.
