History of the Rivalry

The two teams have met twice in a season 15 times.

Highlands has won both games nine times.

CovCath has won both games three times.

The teams have split the two games on three occasions.

Interestingly, CovCath has won the second meeting (the playoffs) all three times!

Incorrect. 1992 the spanked us in regular season game and we won by a touchdown in the playoffs.

Here is the thing about Cov Cath. They are prepared. I went to their scrimmage at Campbell Co at beginning of the year. They were so much more prepared and looked like they had about a month head start on the fighting Camels that game. That was the last game they were healthy. I was very impressed. My prediction earlier was not what I believe but what I hope. I have the utmost respect for the Colonels, but that doesn't mean I like playing them. You can ask in any sport who they (Birds) dislike competing against, the Colonels/Pandas are in top 2 every year. That is because its always one of those two carrying the torch for our region with the exception of NCC in a few sports. I mean no disrespect to any other school in our area, but when you play football at Highlands from the beginning of the year you are thinking "There's CovCath, then there's all the other games." I worked with Jude Hoffman the year after we won state in 1992. He hated every time I wore my ring to work. But we could still talk football and he was a great guy. I got all the respect in the world for CCH but also all the fear in the world in the pit of my stomach. Go Birds!

Highlands is basically like Alabama. Throughout the entire season, fans, sports writers, TV analysts and opposing players gradually grow to think that a team from another conference can outduel the SEC’s best come bowl time. Then, the Tide deliver the truth and it hits everyone like a ton of bricks.

 

So, I admit it. I was blinded by the light (revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night; Manfred Mann, 1976).

 

Here’s my new prediction: Highlands will roll to its seventh straight state championship.

 

According to MaxPreps, such a streak would be the longest ever in American high school football.

Health issue: Not sure how HHS fans can say CCH is "healthy" when their best overall offensive player is out with an injured knee and their starting QB missed the entire season and has played about 15 plays in the last few weeks.

 

CCH is not at full strength. Not making any excuses. Just clearing up the "healthy" myth.

By your description no team is 'healthy' at this point in the season. Please show me a team at full strength after 12 games. No excuses needed. Your team won an impressive 10 games with the players available to them. Your opponent won 11 games with the players available to them. Both have had injuries, both have injuries. May both stay healthy this week.

The complete history makes it sound less harsh if you are a CCH fan, but recent history is a very different reality - over the last 16 years, CCH is a paltry 3-20 in all games vs Highlands. Many point to this game as the end all be all rivalry in NKY. The truth is it's become completely lopsided and it's just another game for Highlands.

Sorry to go off thread, but as I read this I have to comment. No one thinks CCH and Highlands should stop playing each other (work with me and forget the JV debacle). And I know they are in the same district and class so they have to play each other. However, if they weren't in the same class, everyone wants them to keep playing despite that record. Yet, we have posts made and threads started questioning whether Beechwood and CCH should keep playing each other. Over the past 15 years, CCH 9 wins and Beechwood 5. Average score in those 14 games is CCH 23 BW 17. Compare that to the CCH/Highlands track record above. OK. Got that off my chest. Back to the game thread discussion.

Lopsided rivalry or not, CovCath is never just another game for Highlands.

 

Game 1 each season determines home field and seeding for the potential rematch. HHS much better off getting Ashland at home versus traveling to JC.

 

Game 2 is an elimination game and as some have said, de facto state championship game.

 

I know for a fact that Highlands, with the current alignment and significance of win vs. loss, does not consider this just another game.

Lol! You my friend have no clue of what you say. This ISthe only game that matters. Yeah, there are games past this to finish the year, but those usually work out for the better. Don't win this or the regular season game, then things change don't they. So it doesn't matter if the record is 20-23 0ver the past 16 years. I wish it was 23-0. The rivalry is as strong as ever!
