When I started broadcasting in the 8th Region, it was Gallatin/Carroll County. Now it's more Gallatin/Owen County. Any of the border wars would qualify.

I agree with the Oldham Counties, mix any of them up.

They used to be in the same district, long with Oldham (and then South Oldham), correct? Trimble really got the shaft in the last alignment, while the neighboring district of Carroll, Owen, Henry, Eminence and Gallatin is very balanced.

Johnson Central vs. Paintsville (best described to me by someone as, two schools located only a mile apart, but couldn't be more different)

Johnson Central is a county, public school. Paintsville is the city, independent school. More of a county kids versus townies kind of deal I think.

I'll also say that, while it might not be the rivalry it was over the past decade today, North Hardin versus Elizabethtown was big time in the late 1990's, early 2000's. North Hardin won the region more often than Elizabethtown, but Elizabethtown took home the big prize. Lots of fans would argue about who was better and say things like, "we wouldn't trade 20 regional titles for our 1 state championship".

Ballard and Trinity is a big game when they play but I dont consider it a rival game unless they play each other in most sports during the regular season. Ballard (like some other JCPS schools) will not schedule Trinity for regular season games in most sports.

 

In Louisville, PRP v. Butler and Ballard v. Eastern have packed houses and huge emotions throughout the game. Ballard v. Trinity is a great rivalry, but they are not scheduled for regular season games because of Trinity's remarkable penchant to get kids to enroll that have little or no connection to the school or the Catholic traditions of the school. God works in mysterious ways, but the Trinity basketball (and football) program does not. Hence, very few JCPS teams will play them in any sport in the regular season, unless forced to by being in their district.

 

Ballard's football program isn't bothered by your accusations, coach Jackson always tries to schedule T. The deal just isn't worked out, but you're wrong.

God must be an equal opportunity deity because how is it that Ballard has 4 of the top 8 and 5 of the top 10 best players in the 7th region?

Has the opening of Collins took any heat off the Anderson/Shelby rivalry?

Is the North/South Oldham game bigger than Oldham vs. South Oldham?

 

Had a head coach tell me just a year or so ago, that the North/South game was worth going to see, even if you weren't a fan of either team. Said it is a great atmosphere, and that the student bodies for both schools show up. Alas, I haven't been able to make it down to take one of these games in, so I can't offer anything more than what he told me.

Bracken County - Augusta.

Consolidation seems to have killed off a lot of the more heated rivalries in the 12th Region. Of those that remain like Danville/Boyle, Pulaski/Somerset, etc. have lost their impact due to one or more of the programs not doing as well or the fan support dying out in one or both of the schools to where there's nothing there.

 

Southwestern looks to have briefly established a strong program (I anticipate Coach Wright will be gone after this season) which makes for good games against in-county rivals PC & Somerset and in-District foe Wayne County, but still not the standing room-only crowds we used to see. If PC has their program in high gear and a good regional/district foe comes into their gym then you have a great show (like last year's PC-Southwestern game), but generally I don't see too many rivalries remaining that give the fans something to anticipate & fill the gym.

 

Would love to see it come back. Perhaps the dwindling crowds are due to the Great Recession and once we truly recover (jobs, not stock market) the fans will return. Lord knows the superintendents, principals, ADs & Coaches would welcome it as it is killing their budgets.

I think it's a little different from those.

When I look at the 10th Region, there are three that I think stand out:

 

1. Campbell County/Bishop Brossart

2. George Rogers Clark/Montgomery County

3. Harrison County/Pendleton County
