Hey BGP, tell me the best high school basketball rivalries in the state...I'm going to expand my travels a bit this season. I'm looking for the best atmospheres, most intense rivalries, etc.

Which regions are you familiar with and which are you not? I know of some good rivalries, but you probably know of them too.

 

I'd say if you go out to Western Kentucky, Bowling Green vs. Warren Central is a good one.

I'd say if you go out to Western Kentucky, Bowling Green vs. Warren Central is a good one.

As a Conner alum and huge NKY b-ball fan I would have to sadly disagree. The lack of support for most of the 33rd district teams is disappointing. Cooper probably has the best of the bunch.

 

In the 70s you had to get to gym very early in the Conner/Boone JV game in order to get a seat. Conner seats about 3000. Now they don't even roll out the top section of the stands.

 

Used to be outstanding. Now? Just another game that no one comes to.

I am sure in an area like Oldham County. Any game that involves any 2 of the 3 teams playing each other is a big one.

Eastern Kentucky:

 

North Laurel vs. South Laurel (cross town rivalry)

Clay County vs. Corbin (have only began playing one another again in the last decade or so)

Corbin vs. South Laurel (two schools that are really similar and situated close to one another)

Clay County vs. Jackson County (two schools that have players, fans, and sometimes even coaches that don't really care for one another)

 

Perry Central vs. Hazard (was to the point they didn't play for a long time)

Knott Central vs. Cordia (has only been a "rivalry" recently, but it's heated)

 

Johnson Central vs. Paintsville (best described to me by someone as, two schools located only a mile apart, but couldn't be more different)

Pikeville vs. Shelby Valley (don't know if they still do it, but in region, Pikeville's students throw bouncy balls onto the floor after the first basket)

 

 

Lexington Area:

Lexington Catholic vs. Scott County

Anytime two of the city schools that are having a good year meet (Bryan Station, Dunbar, Henry Clay, Lafayette, Tates Creek)

Anytime a city school having a good year meets Lexington Catholic or Scott County

Ballard and Trinity is a big game when they play but I dont consider it a rival game unless they play each other in most sports during the regular season. Ballard (like some other JCPS schools) will not schedule Trinity for regular season games in most sports.

Campbell County vs Bishop Brossart is a good one in NKY. Played at Campbell County Middle School and is sold out each year. It has a Regional tourney feel at a regular season game.

Agree huge district rivals .

In Louisville, PRP v. Butler and Ballard v. Eastern have packed houses and huge emotions throughout the game. Ballard v. Trinity is a great rivalry, but they are not scheduled for regular season games because of Trinity's remarkable penchant to get kids to enroll that have little or no connection to the school or the Catholic traditions of the school. God works in mysterious ways, but the Trinity basketball (and football) program does not. Hence, very few JCPS teams will play them in any sport in the regular season, unless forced to by being in their district.

When I started broadcasting in the 8th Region, it was Gallatin/Carroll County. Now it's more Gallatin/Owen County. Any of the border wars would qualify.

I agree with the Oldham Counties, mix any of them up.
