It's a city that used to have 1.8 million people in it. It now has about 700,000 and of those that remain, most of them are there because they can't afford to move to the suburbs. No people, no taxes. No taxes, no revenue for civil services. No civil services, no new people. We're at what we can only hope is the low point of a 50-year spiral for what was once one of America's great cities.

It is a combination of all of those factors. There are a lot of interesting reads on how Detroit got to the point of bankruptcy.

Multiple cases of corruption in City Hall didn't help either. And on top of that, when things were great in Detroit they pretty much mortgaged their future by going in debt thinking that there would be the revenue in the future to pay for it. Basically decades of living beyond their means doomed the future of this once great city.

Outside of the like 15 block radius where the casinos , lions , red wings and tigers stadium is located this city is a war zone . 47% of the city is illiterate, twice as many people retired collecting pensions than working. 40% of street lights don't work , average time it takes for police to respond to a 911 call is 58 mins. 11x higher murder rate than NYC. There used to be 300k manufacturing jobs today 27k in the city . The suburbs of Detroit are nice well kept place to live. But the city of Detroit is a cess pool. They only have themselves to blame for electing corrupt official after corrupt official. Two previous mayors forces out of office and the head of city council was forced to resign because of relations with a minor. Police chief forced out to do relation with an employee. Detroit is the model for why liberal economics don't work. Bankruptcy is needed to fix the problems. A bailout won't work without bankruptcy first.

I truly believe all 3 are intertwined and the main reason to Detroits downfall. Add on top of that ccorrrupt politicians probably added to the problem. Unions are the #1 reason in my opinion and if the Airline industry was mainly based in one major city the samne thing would of happened to that city.

July 23, 201313 yr And I heard something like 64 or 68'000 abandoned buildings. Seriously when you take the highway to downtown and pass through the city its depressing. Even if you know the estimated number it doesn't prepare you for site you will see. Houses with holes in the roof, broken windows, graffiti, fire damage . Rows upon rows of these houses.
July 23, 201313 yr I think I gave you some facts. But Detroit has been the center of Union corruption for decades. Not all unions are this way but its part of Detroit's history. Under liberal leadership for over 50 years Detroit went from 1.8 million people to 700k today. So Detroit has lost the population of Dallas. Detroit has been a large government mecca so now 1 out of 55 citizens is employed by the city. Number was much worse before they were forced to start laying off some cops. Give you an example of bloated spending. The water district has a blacksmith employed . The water district has no horses for him to care for which was what the position was for years ago. Its in the union contract they can't eliminate position. So there is a man making like 70 k on tax payer dime with no clear duties

The truth is that the leaders are liberal, union democrats. You fail to be educated, because you do not want to believe is it those closet to your beliefs that are the cause of this mess and many more like it throughout the US and the world.
