Big News Coming About Rupp Arena

Featured Replies

If I remember, the university completely botched the Pauley renovations in a number of ways, so as long as UK is more on top of things than UCLA was (which shouldn't be hard), their experience will be a little different.

According to that article Jumper_Dad posted, it looks like they're planning to start the project in phases beginning in Fall 2014, so that'll go straight through the middle of the season. If that first phase is luxury suites, then they can probably start that just by closing off a few rows at the top of the lower bowl, as suggested. We'll have to see but they may be able to do this piecemeal without having to shut the place down for too long. Rupp is already in a much better situation than Pauley was.

Are the suites going to be on the upper part of the lower arena? We have really good lower arena seats, hope we don't lose them.

Sell me 2 for a generic game even a preseason!

I could see games played with reduced seating during the season. I think for the most part upper arena will be left pretty much as is (could add seat backs, that would be nice) and any luxury boxes would have to go at the top of the lower arena, that area could be blocked off during games.

I got news for you, if they just put seatbacks on those bleachers it will make the rows even narrower. I'm only 6'1" but after sitting through games in the upper bowl I thought I would need knee surgery. That's one of the reasons I won't take tickets offered if they're in the upper bowl. I simply cannot fold up my legs any smaller.

That is true, I hadn't even thought of that...it would be very tight with seat backs.

But the plans do call for them in the story I read from WKYT

I wouldn't brag about being the designer of Paul Brown Stadium.

But isn't he the one that designed the trophy case for Indiana that holds the infamous trophy where Indiana beat Kentucky during the 2011-2012 regular season?

:lol2: Hubby is the one that controls the tickets ...not me.

I would like to see the renovation plans. I can't imagine them making extensive changes to Rupp and having it closed for only a few months. To put in a club and private suites, there going to have to do a fair amount of demolition to the existing structure.

It took a good 10 months to renovate the USF Sun Dome, a much, much smaller facility. They started in June of 2011 and USF lost the facility for the entire 11/12 season. Don't get me wrong, I love the new Dome, but after spending a season in it, it's not the Tampa Bay Times Forum and I would hope Rupp to be more like that.

Some UK fans are up in arms about Rupp Arena being made better. UK fans are just plain weird sometimes.

Place is crappy. Long overdue. I've turned down tickets a number of times. I'm not going to sit in those nosebleeds.

Said it'll be done in phases, starting in Fall 2014 but that none of the work will take away from UK hosting home games.

I have sat in upper and lower arena and enjoyed the games from both areas. Upper arena is more fun as you have fans that are into the game, standing and cheering the entire time. Lower is more comfortable and better view.

I'll take either :)

It's a two year project but they claim that as long as they do it in stages as they're planning UK can still play all their scheduled home games. I'd like to see the actual plans as well but they've just now hired an architect and builder so those are still a fair way off.

Unless you just hate the Bengals, PBS has won an award for architecture.

If the number of seats isn't dropping and they're adding boxes, the upper seats will be worse than before (which IMO is saying something at Rupp).

There are a lot fewer sections in the upper level at the Yum Center with a good view of the game than there were at Freedom Hall.
