Big News Coming About Rupp Arena

Featured Replies

Why would they have a press conference for bad news? I'm no PR guy, but that seems like press release material to me.

I'm sure it's to do with renovation plans or corporate sponsorship or some other such thing.

Saw on one of the Facebook UK Fan sites that Jerry Tipton spoke to a woman from here in Somerset that said she would no longer be a UK fan (or something like that) if Rupp was renovated. I don't know how as a fan renovating Rupp would/should upset you, especially if you are fan that watches nearly all of the games on TV. I might be upset if I had season tickets and got moved to worse seats due to the adding of suites, but otherwise why get in a tizzy over this?

:lol2: Sports fans are a crazy bunch.

The Rupp Arena/Lexington Center now has an architect and a builder. The Lexington Center Corporation just approved the decision to hire Los Angeles architectural firm NBBJ to redesign and renovate Rupp Arena and the Convention Center, and Hunt Construction to build it.

NBBJ recently redesigned UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, details of which you can see here. Hunt Construction built the original Rupp Arena back in the 70′s. According to Jon Hale of KYForward, Joe B. Hall is in attendance at the meeting and praised both firms’ work.

Good for UK. That place needs a face lift.

NBBJ's other sports projects include L.A.'s Staples Center and the Hangzhou Olympic Stadium.

^ These photos are just renderings of what could be, actual design photos are still being worked on and will be released at a later date.

Are they going to build it in the parking lots across the street?

No clue. I've just been getting a few details off of twitter. They said they would release the full details of the press conference later today.

I thought they were just renovating Rupp, not building a new one.

Are they going to build it in the parking lots across the street?

It's going to be a whole new building?

It's a renovation, not new construction. As said earlier, NBBJ did the Pauley Pavilion redesign in LA a few years ago. On a larger scale, the same company did the grand redesign of the Bund in Shanghai, which is the city's waterfront commercial and political district. It's pretty impressive stuff.

For an idea of what they're capable of if they're really let loose, check out the City of Capitals buildings they put up in Moscow. For more reserved American examples, they built the headquarters for Boeing and Reebok.

It's going to be a whole new building?

I don't think so, it is going to be a renovation of Rupp. One city in Kentucky has already been boondoggled into building a new arena that they can't afford. No way Lexington will make the same mistake after seeing what has happened to finances at YUM. YUM is a great building, State of the Art...but the financial projections to pay for it just are not materializing and probably won't unless they get an NBA team to share YUM.

Oh my bad... I misunderstood. I thought it was going to be a whole new place.
