Who else would be able to play them? I think it's St Theresa or Catherine that runs a 7th/8th grade B league for girls. It's one thing if your team is playing a league and several out of conference games, it's another when that leahue was some kids only option. Gym availability for leices just got leagues/practices just got tighter.

St.Augustine in Covington 7th/8th grade program is ran by the Holy Name Society and not the school. It goes back to when athletics were banned by a priest at St.Augustine a few decades ago. I don't think this rule will apply to their Junior high team because it has never been ran by the school.

Why did the priest ban sports?

Sunday masses in the Diocese of Covington begin at 7:30am (St. Agnes) and finish up at 1:00pm when the 12:00pm masses at St. Paul in Florence and St. Therese in Southgate wrap up.

We have a 12:15 at St. Thomas...but it almost always wraps up by 1:00 p.m.

Heard this started when the superintendent did not like a situation where his son was placed on a team. He than started to explore playing time and guidelines from other dioceses.

I agree it could be fun during some booster meetings.

Will make it a real challenge to play a traditional 60 game schedule.

I will agree with no games on individual parishes during their Mass hours, but an all day restriction is completely overboard and an all too typical response in today's society. You can't put regulations in that will force families to attend Mass and/or spend time together. The families that value that time together are making it happen already! Those that aren't won't change because of some Diocesan directive. What's next - no festivals, bingos, or other activities on Sunday? Can't have that, it takes away the almighty $$ and how will they implement equal time to play a game at the festival and insure everyone is a winner and goes home with a trophy!

Can you expand on the playing time comment? It sounds like your saying that they are proposing to enact some type of equal playing time rule?

Couple things after having just read the Covington Messenger which published an article about this.

1) They are calling this proposed changes for elementary athletics- I read that as K thru 5th grade. Not Middle School. I think that makes a difference in the discussion.

2) I didn't see anything in the article mentioning playing time so I'm still curious where the OP saw this?

Did they specifically call out "K thru 5th grade"? Because I've not known the diocese to make much, if any designation between K-5 and Middle School within their school system.

Without looking into it myself, that's what I would have guessed.

Elementary is traditionally K-8 in Diocese of Covington. From Mr. Clines: "Education policy 10 and 19 of the 2006 D of Cov Synod called for specific guidelines for athletic events."

 

From the Messenger: The handbook is an extensive offering for selecting a coach, the responsibilities of the principal, funding an athletic program, practices, playing time and discipline.

 

BTW previously I believe most schools Athletic/ Booster club set their own standards regarding playing time, selecting a coach etc. Some schools, for example, mandated a player in good standing play at least a full quarter in basketball up to a certain grade level (usually 7th/8th grade) and then it becomes the coach's decision as leagues at that level are considered competitive. Some leagues have rules, for example, removing starters after a lead of XX number of points.

 

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out as honestly I believe the Diocese has no clue what they are getting into.

Playing time issue may cause AA's to select fewer to an A squad if there is no flexibility. 7 selected instead of 8 0r 9. Anyway you slice it, you will have parents upset. Make squad and get barely a quarter, don't make squad because they didn't want to promise Junior more playing time than he deserves.

Bringing this up to the forefront again because this season the Clines fella )schools superintendent of the diocese of Covington) himself coached the St. Joe 8th Grade Team (which is a totally different conflict of interest/discussion for another time). They played in a ton of tournaments. Wonder if they every played on Sundays? lol.
