Diocese of Covington Grade School Athletics Guidelines

Featured Replies

Diocese has published guidelines for grade school athletics which are sort of voluntary this year and sort of mandatory next year.

Ought to make for some even more lively grade school Athletic/Boosters Club meetings.

Don't think their will be much push-back on things like Sundays being non-sport days for school athletic teams (hey leaves more time for AAU/Club games) but when you start getting into playing time it might be a can of worms you can't put the lid back on.

Curious about the Sunday restriction and whether or not it is only during normal Mass hours or an all day restriction. If they restrict the entire day, it will eliminate tournament fundraisers for volleyball and basketball.

Sunday masses in the Diocese of Covington begin at 7:30am (St. Agnes) and finish up at 1:00pm when the 12:00pm masses at St. Paul in Florence and St. Therese in Southgate wrap up. Then they go again from 5:30-6:30pm (The Cathedral Basilica of The Assumption), 7:00-8:00pm (St. Henry) and 8:00-9:00pm (Thomas More Chapel). That essentially would only leave the 1:00pm-5:30pm window if they were only restricting mass hours.

Not to mention the fact that there are Saturday afternoon/evening masses at 4:00pm, 4:30pm, 5:00pm, and 5:30pm in the diocese.

They should take up the collection plate at the basketball games.

IHM's last Mass is 12:30, so that cuts it to a 1:30-5:30 Sunday game window.

This is a killer. I'm pretty sure one of the middle school leagues plays on Sunday nights. Some teams play Cincy tourneys and those go on Sundays.

I used to coach a team in the diocese and we often played Sunday games in Cincinnati. I didn't like it. There needs to be a day, and Sunday seems like the best choice, where there simply aren't games.

No joke. Especially in grade school, how about spending a day WITH your kids instead of a day WATCHING your kids?

It there an instruction manuel for that concept? Thanks!

This will be interesting, with Cov Cath just starting HS Wrestling, and having a youth team the last few years.....almost all but one or two youth wrestling events are on Sundays.

I'd be very surprised if the bishop and Mike Clines really cared one way or another about Cov Cath's youth wrestling team.

St.Augustine in Covington 7th/8th grade program is ran by the Holy Name Society and not the school. It goes back to when athletics were banned by a priest at St.Augustine a few decades ago. I don't think this rule will apply to their Junior high team because it has never been ran by the school.

I think that will depend on how the diocese words its rules on the matter. Sure, people can independently start a club team that plays on Sundays...but then all the diocese needs to do is say, "No grade school athletic teams sponsored or operated by any entity of the Diocese of Covington may participate in games on Sundays. Diocesan facilities shall also remained closed to any organized grade school athletic organizations on Sundays."

Then the "Holy Name's team" is in the same boat as all the other schools' teams.
