Celtics & Butler are similar. Both have history of slow white guys, both lost in finals in 2010 & both have no chance to win 40 gms this yr.

As a Celtics fan, I'm too shocked to know how much I like this hire right now. It's gonna take a few days to sink in... Didn't see it coming at all.

 

I'm not a huge fan of the timing from a PR standpoint. You don't see a lot of coaches accepting jobs in July... Then again, not a lot of jobs open up in July.

I won't comment on the move by Stevens, I'm just glad Boston didn't do the usual thing and hire another NBA coach, it seems like once you coach in the NBA, head or assistant coach, you are there for life going from team to team.

Still counting the millions he made there, I'm not sure he is done counting though, lol. But the mistake is he was GM and I think other things as well, not just the coach. Just because you can coach doesn't mean you can be a good GM, and being a good player doesn't mean you will be a good GM either, look at Jordan.

Man, that hire is gonna be a home run or a strikeout. I don't see much middle ground for him.

 

I think he's gonna realize how good he had it at Butler when it's all over. There will be another school that will take him even if he's fired quickly, but he was Butler basketball and could practically do no wrong while he was there. He built the program from the ground up, brought them to a new conference, and has no football to deal with.

 

I'm sure losing that kind of job security is offset by the kind of pay college teams (and especially Butler) just can't offer, but the pro game and the Celtics franchise is just a completely different animal. Still yet, when it's all said and done, worst case scenario from the standpoint of him as a bench-coach (i.e., not involving some type of moral or ethical catastrophe), he'll have a nice nest egg and a reputation as a professional coach that will land him his next collegiate job.

 

Nothing against Stevens, but if UK (my alma mater) were to have to replace Calipari with someone whose currently a D1 head coach and I had to make the hire, I think my first call would narrowly go to Shaka Smart.

I remember the thought was he may be the Pacers coach one day. I'm thinking franchises like the Celtics and Lakers aren't the ones you can easily turn down when they want your services. Especially if you were coaching at Butler when they called you. I still can't really believe it either. I don't even remember hearing his name on the radar when Doc quit on the Celtics.

From everything I had heard he only had intentions of leaving Butler for IU or the Pacers. With both of those paths seemingly blocked at the moment, you listen very hard when the Celtics call. It was just so out of left field in the Twitter age where everything is leaked sooner than later. Just a stunning turn of events in how it went down...
