May 6, 201313 yr Track officials are notorius for how obnoxiously persnickety they are on rules. The absolute worst. They will let you line up and run your race with some little obscure uniform violation, then DQ you once the race is over.

I know nothing about track and have been to a hand full of meets. Every meet that I have been to has the same official that lines the kids up, reminds me of a DI in Marine boot camp. He talks to those kids like dogs, maybe that's how it's always been but it seemed odd to me. Also seemed weird that the coaches aren't allowed on the infield? Only sport that I know that does that.
May 6, 201313 yr The whole excessive celebration prohibition has gotten way out of hand. That's what this was, really. The rule states that raising a hand is excessive celebration. That's what was violated and that is the rule that is ridiculous. Regardless of why the officials initially DQ'd the team, the reason the ruling was upheld, was because of the excessive celebration by raising the hand. Whether a kid is pointing toward heaven or high fiving his teammates, the rules to prevent somebody from getting their feelings hurt is ruining sports. Why bother winning, when you can take no joy in it? At that point, it just becomes exercise.

May 6, 201313 yr The absolute worst. They will let you line up and run your race with some little obscure uniform violation, then DQ you once the race is over. I've seen it happen often at the State Championships in both Track and Cross Country.
