Really? More steps? I should remind Ben Zimmerman, Suzy Wera and Dr. Hutton that this is the Beechwood basketball job. Not football, not baseball, but basketball. Personally, if I were Erik Goetz, I would get the heck out of dodge.

 

Why would you get the heck out of dodge if you were Goetz?

You can look at the Beechwood basketball job in one of two ways.

 

1. Basketball is the third choice sport for boys. Baseball and football draw off the talent. You are in one of the toughest districts in the state and you are a small school playing in NKAC D2. That makes the job one of the toughest in N. Ky., perhaps the state.

 

2. You are coaching at arguably the best school in the state with great kids and family support. It is a school that families want to be a part of. There is talent in the building. There is even more talent in district that is not attending the school because they are choosing private schools. If you build the program from elementary on up, get the talent in the school and the district on the court, find a core of kids who want basketball first who believe in you and the program ... then you can have success.

If they met Tues, no.

 

It's a process. When all steps have been completed, it will be announced who the next coach is.

 

Whatever steps in the process remain will result with Goetz being the head coach.

There are more kids in the track program than football and basketball combined.

Not to mention ... with the exception of a few kids ... all of the spring talent is on the track team (which is not going to change to begin with ... and when St. Henry, Walton, Fort Campbell move up to AA in track next year ... there should be many chances to win the big one).

 

The only concern that I would have (and nearly all the kids) ... would be this ... Beechwood is a small school. Academics are most definitely FIRST. From there is a spirit of cooperation with all of the athletic teams (for instance ... you can't tell the Max Nussbaums of the world that they have to choose between track and baseball or .. you can't tell him that he can't lift weights after basketball practice. As a coach or leader of an activity ... you have to find a way to make things work). Most basketball people (not necessarily coaches) are not real big into sharing guys.

 

From my point of view ... if you can embrace that thought process ... you can have a pretty good basketball team at Beechwood. If you can't .. you may end up with 2 freshman and 10 8th graders sitting next to you on the bench.

 

It is a completely different mind set than other schools ... ...

I also wonder about the commitment kids at Beechwood have to the basketball program. Everyone loves the football team and for really good reasons. Small schools have to share athletes, but at Beechwood it seems that the kids who play multiple sports have basketball as their least committed activity. It's no one's fault, but it's the way it is. Kids who play football and basketball have a better shot at winning state in football, thus their focus is stronger on football. Again, you can't blame them, but it puts the basketball coach in a tough position.

You guys are forgetting that Head Coaches make their money from teaching...not coaching.

 

Similar situation to Brannen. Private to Public is a no brainer if you're a basketball coach, in most cases.

 

I won't go in to detail, but I can promise you that the delay of an announcement has nothing to do with any admin at Beechwood.

However it appears Erik doesn't have much of a choice at this point, which is tough for him.

I don't know what happened to coach Miller and Beechwood, I was too busy lately to go to more than 4 games this past year and those did not involve any tri-state teams. So I can't comment on that situation, except that I like coach Miller and a good guy.

 

I can only say this. Any good coach, which Goetz is, wants to go to a place that they can be successful, can that happen at Beechwood? They are arguably in one of the toughest districts not only in NKY, but the state. What would Beechwood consider being "successful"? What would a good coach consider being "successful"?

 

Goetz's name, as most already know, was in the mix for other schools in the area, and all but one has a new coach. So as your point about choice, that is true.

 

But as many have stated on here recently, most private schools don't pay as much as public schools. Most would agree that Brannan would have stayed at NCC if they paid as much as other schools, and have the same pension. But you have to think of family first, at times that also limits your choices.

 

That is all I will say, for the next few days.

Where do we disagree? That baseball and football come first? If you are saying track has a higher priority for kids than football and baseball, yes, we disagree on that. There are always going to be a couple kids who have their best chance at success in track over the other sports and for them track will rank #1. But for the vast majority, football takes precedence.

 

The track program has great participation and having both girls and boys involved, it is going to win the numbers game. With track being in its 3rd season for the boys, awesome job. There has been some great success for track. It is a great complimentary program to football.

 

Track actually proves the point that basketball can have success at Beechwood. It shows how much talent is in the school.

Congrats to Erik and Congrats to Beechwood.

Umm.....not sure ALL the spring talent. There are some fairly talented, and fairly fast, kids on the baseball team that I am sure would help.

No doubt that they would help .... but the number is not higher than that ... which still leaves significantly more speed/talent in track (does not mean that there is not a LOT of baseball talent ... there is .... ie: Combs is a GREAT baseball player ... who would not have an impact in track).

 

Combine that with the fact that Fort Campbell, St. Henry, Walton, Glasgow move out of Class A track next year ... I don't see any change in the talent distribution to the track program. In three seasons .... the track program has become a top five program. There is a football coach who works hard to share athletes .... (which is something that he does .. that he does not get enough credit for). If basketball is willing to work in a similar manner ... things go very well for them. If not ... it makes things a little tougher.

 

Good luck to the new coach ... whoever it ends up being (I don't dispute who it will be--don't spend a lot of time patting yourself on the back when basically all of your inside information about the timing has been wrong).
