For Max ... it was day by day. The way the schedule worked out--Max did not miss any track meets. If track had practice--Max went to any/all baseball games. As the season went on ... it was apparent that Max's involvement in baseball was going to be limited. What I can also say--is that from day one .. Coach Mullins was on board to try to make things work with Max (Max had approached him about trying to do both and he was willing to give it a shot). The burden of communication fell on Max .. and Max alone. We made a schedule--to visually see where the conflicts were. We never kept Max for practice when there was a baseball game. Baseball never kept Max for practice when we had a meet. The few times that there were conflicts ... it usually worked to where it was an important meet (like Conference) where baseball played a team where Max was not needed. The truth of the matter is ... Coach Mullins was completely committed to doing what was best for everyone (Coach Myerhoff was the same--with Grant Birindelli--who also still plays baseball--even though he is ranked as one of the best freshman distance runners in the country). I feel like we were committed to doing what was best as well. To go further .. the situation would have been slanted more to baseball if Max were more important to baseball. For me--it was easy to be flexible (especially after leaving Conner) when there are coaches committed to doing what is best for all programs and for the development of the kids. There are times where it may be difficult .. but it is a million times easier than not having those kids at all.

I'll bite. Just remember, you asked me why I would get out of dodge.

 

I like Erik, but I really liked Michael Miller (not related). Suzy Wera is the first reason. I'm not a fan of her manipulating and back stabbing. I'm sure she has her supporters, but I'm not one of them.

 

I also wonder about the commitment kids at Beechwood have to the basketball program. Everyone loves the football team and for really good reasons. Small schools have to share athletes, but at Beechwood it seems that the kids who play multiple sports have basketball as their least committed activity. It's no one's fault, but it's the way it is. Kids who play football and basketball have a better shot at winning state in football, thus their focus is stronger on football. Again, you can't blame them, but it puts the basketball coach in a tough position.

 

I know it may appear that I have an agenda here, but I don't. We all have our opinions, those just happen to be mine. I'm in no way in favor of how the Michael Miller situation was handled. If I'm an experienced varsity coach - I don't go there. However it appears Erik doesn't have much of a choice at this point, which is tough for him.

 

Great point about the small school and multiple sports. The reality is that Coach Goetz (assuming he is officially named someday before next season) and Beechwood will have to be patient with one another for the situation to work. The basketball commitment school-wide is negative, remaining layers are inexperienced and lack size/talent to compete at the high school level. That is where motivating those kids to overachieve - showing siginificant improvement in both level of intensity and Ws v. Ls should be the goal for varsity for the next two seasons. Then perhaps he should shoot for an opportunity to compete for "Class A" unofficial regional title in the 3-4 years. If you achieve that, you will be a legitimate threat to make a little noise in the real district/regions.

 

His second immediate goal should be outreach to the parents and students coming up that could feed the program in the future. There is good to excellent talent and parental/student commitment to basketball in all elementary and middle school grades The elementary ranks in particular are stacked with teams that are the best in the area and players committed to basketball two and three seasons a year; one elementary class has a nationally ranked AAU team. Not that football will be unseated, but as more parents hold their kids out of football to minimize potential brain trauma, there will be a chance to make Beechwood basketball work with players who are not football-first athletes. That opportunity is years away though, so outreach and inclusion now in the "building of the program" will be key.

 

Coach Goetz (or whomever is named) will have the opportunity to change the basketball culture in the long run if they play the development of the younger grades correctly - otherwise the exceptional basketball-first talent will simply transfer if they don't see improved commitment to their sport.

I also knew another candidate a couple of years ago who mentioned that the new gym is on hold? Any chance they get another gym soon after the current construction is complete?

I don't know about any immediate plans or likelihood, but it is a priority for many in the community. It is a critical piece if they want to build successful basketball, volleyball, etc. programs.
