I have gone to many spring games and have yet seen one that gives me the feeling of the true team that took the field in the fall. Remember, the spring game is nothing more than one of many scrimmages and practices. You just get to see the one.

I think Whitlow's statement after last night was "If you want to move a QB to another position get a #80 jersey for Pat Towles."

 

Really, you got that from last night. Actually, it should have said, "get me the ball 25 yards down field and I will another 25 to it". The last three drives Pat Tolwes was in, they ran the ball 95% of the time. Totally didn't make sense if this is the new "air raid" offense. Stops said at halftime they were going to open it up. Was there a pass longer than 15 yrds? Whitlow looked good running, but like Sticky said, "no touch QB football" helped that. This game didn't show me anything other than a bunch of short out passes and bubble screens. Air raid means let it fly down field doesn't it. If so, I think PT has best chance of succeeding. But hey, I'm biased I guess some will say.

Air Raid means short passes that turn into long runs after the catch, for the most part.

Whitlow Smith Tolwes

Whitlow, Smith, Phillips, Towles.

Towles just doesn't look comfortable. Looks like he is fighting himself in the pocket.

It is tough to say because the WR corps is thin and was split up, but Whitlow looked very comfortable.

The offense suits Smith because of the shorter intermediate throws the offense calls for, but he doesn't make good downfield throws and that has been the knock on him.

Whitlow adds the dimension of running the ball and you are going to have to account for him with everything so spread out.

The Phillips kid throws a really nice ball.

Towles is going to have to take to some coaching and get better.

I liked Cunningham yesterday. Seemed to connect and mesh with Whitlow pretty well.

What offense does fit a slow release and being not real accurate? It is going to be interesting to see how it all shapes out. If you look at the Texas Tech years they didn't exactly have world beaters at QB. The guys put up numbers but it wasn't like any of them would of been starters any where else for the most part. Like others have said the offense is not designed around the verticale passing game though it can attack in that manner. Its all about numbers, leverage and green grass.

Well the good news for Towles is that neither of you two will be involved in the decision.

 

Patrick has the tools and will win the job over the summer. That's my biased opinion.

Its been funny to me to sit here and read the comments made by all the qb experts.

1. It was 1 practice. Whitlow did not win the job and Towles did not lose the job Saturday.

2. Neil called several vertical shots and the qbs generally checked the ball down to the rb. (who was wide open by the way)

3. They did not throw bubble screens. They ran what is called a 41/51 fast in this offense which goes to the outside receiver and involves no bubble at all.

4. The volume of concepts you saw Saturday running and passing will be trimmed down in the fall based on who the qb is and what the team does well.

5. The air-raid has evolved since the days of Mumme 14 years ago. Now it is play fast and do whatever it takes to score. There could be more passing in the fall which most people assume is the air-raid, but if we have better backs and Te than receivers you will see more like Saturday continue with balanced running and heavier personnel groups.

For those complaining about lack of volume in the new Air Raid 2.0 passing attack, you have to realize numbers were pretty thin. I mean let's face it talent wise and body wise they are thin as it is, then you split up into two teams? Brown and Stoops alluded to the fact they ran the ball way more than they normally would just so they wouldn't kill everybody (offense and defense). The run was meant to slow the pace and give some of these guys some time to breath a little bit. Look for them to open it up a little more once the season starts.

No one obviously is an "expert" here, well maybe a few. People share their opinions here, it is a message board after all. Whitlow looked good, right now I think he gives them the best chance to win. If Pat is deserving of the job he will get the job, same with Smith.

The key for Towles is to take to coaching.

Last year was a mess for him. It was not the ideal situation with the season going down the tubes. Then he got hurt and that compounded the issues. He and Randy Sanders butted heads and it was not pretty.

I hope like crazy that he can take control and excel, but I think he is sitting behind Smith and Whitlow.

Would a redshirt year help him?
