Then the school or rep of the school shouldnt let the info out to begin with. Don't ask other coaches "Hey you interested if we let Coach X go?" Its going to get out. Administrators think they live in some sort of fish bowl, they don't. They can't wait to spread the next news or gossip. Education people are the worst for this crap.

O I agree with you. HS athletics can be so petty and a decade ago I was probably part of the pettiness.

When it comes to offending I have no offseason.

You can argue what the Beechwood administration did or didn't do forever and I don't think it gets you anywhere. I just want to say that I would have liked to see Michael receive more time to build a basketball program than what he received. At a school the size of Beechwood, you need time to work back through the grade school and junior high programs to build a pipeline that can eventually feed the varsity team. I my humble opinion I think it’s less about the X’s and O’s and more about the pipeline. Michael didn’t have enough time to do that, or at least come to the realization that he needed to do it. I’m sure that he would have if given enough time.

 

That being said, I am also not surprised that the new AD is making changes. If Suzy Wera feels like she has to make changes, don’t be surprised if she feels compelled to do what she feels is necessary.

How do you build a program when you have both boys and girls, grades 3 through varsity sharing a single gym. I've heard a lot of the Beechwood middle school teams have to drive to Florence to get gym time. If administrators would build a second gym then the younger teams would get more developmental time. There is no way that should be blamed on Miller!

I think I said I would have liked to see him get more time. And yes, I agree the gym situation is not his or any other coaches’ fault. I don’t think anyone cares whose fault it is, they just want it resolved ASAP. For all I know Michael could have had a long-term plan and just didn’t have enough time to execute it or see the fruits of his labor.

I know Michael has many supporters and is well thought of, so please don't get offended when I bring up an opposing view. I just want to keep facts in front of all reading this and keep things balanced.

 

On building the pipeline from middle school on up, the pipeline was built during Shumate's 4 years as coach. Coach Shumate had a hand in everything in the program during his time. Coach Miller did not take over a program that was unsuccessful and needed to be rebuilt. Coach Miller did make coaching changes in the lower ranks so it was not something he did not pay attention to.

 

On a second gym, it is a big need. Everyone is aware of this. In a K-12 school, one gym is not enough to handle all the needs. Yes, the elementary teams all have to find gym time outside the school system. There is still another round of construction planned. I believe the administration is trying to address this need somehow during the next construction project. That being said, I don't think lack of gym time is a big problem keeping Beechwood from having success in basketball.

 

Again, just putting another viewpoint out there.

On Michael, I will speculate, in my opinion Michael is the kind of coach that will shoot straight with parents. When you win state championships and/or have a ton of success you can do that, when your program is the red-headed step child and you are losing that is a problem.

 

I can see where Suzy Wera is coming from, she knows the program is probably going to be a loser as long as they are in D2 and she would rather have a coach the parents can live with vs. one their pride and ego can't handle; and therefore they do a lot of complaining.

 

In other words, as much as I hate to see this, I don't blame Wera because the program is set up for failure.

And sorry to hear about coach Miller, as many have said, he is a great guy!

I am ok with Beechwood in D2 but they need to make the schedule work better for them. I see Beechwood basketball as in between D3 and D2. D3 is just a notch too easy and D2 is a notch too hard. I would fill the rest of the schedule outside the NKAC D2 games with most, if not all, D3 level schools. That would hopefully get the team a clear opportunity every year to be a .500 basketball team and keep the challenge there for when a talented group of players are playing.
