What is D2, D3, etc? What does all of that mean?

It's an NKAC thing. D3 has teams like Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Villa, Silver Grove, Heritage and Calvary. Beechwood usually dominated these teams, I know Beechwood was talking about trying to work out staying in D3 but only playing each D3 team once, not twice, That didn't work out for some reason.

 

Not sure of most teams in the NKAC D2, but I think it's teams like Brossart, NCC and Highlands. I am sure that Holy Cross and Holmes are D2, I think, but they have to play them anyway for seeding in the district.

On Michael, I will speculate, in my opinion Michael is the kind of coach that will shoot straight with parents. When you win state championships and/or have a ton of success you can do that, when your program is the red-headed step child and you are losing that is a problem.

 

I can see where Suzy Wera is coming from, she knows the program is probably going to be a loser as long as they are in D2 and she would rather have a coach the parents can live with vs. one their pride and ego can't handle; and therefore they do a lot of complaining.

 

In other words, as much as I hate to see this, I don't blame Wera because the program is set up for failure.

 

Sadly, I think you've hit the nail on the head Guru. I say sadly because those issues are about making the AD's life easier, not what is best for the kids (remember them? The one's the administration should be working for.) I know you know Miller well, I think I'm right in saying he would not be the kind of person to be "content with .500 in DII"?He'd want to build a winner?

 

I am ok with Beechwood in D2 but they need to make the schedule work better for them. I see Beechwood basketball as in between D3 and D2. D3 is just a notch too easy and D2 is a notch too hard. I would fill the rest of the schedule outside the NKAC D2 games with most, if not all, D3 level schools. That would hopefully get the team a clear opportunity every year to be a .500 basketball team and keep the challenge there for when a talented group of players are playing.

 

Miller was WELL aware of this. Anyone anywhere near the program in any way would know Miller was very vocal about the schedule being too difficult. Shumate made a ton of two year contracts right before he left that kept Beechwood stuck with murder's row for a schedule the last two years. I assume schedules are just now getting finalized for next season? probably explains the delay in letting Miller go. Wera probably didn't want to be stuck with that task......

 

And as far as the gym time VOR, do you really think one gym is enough for 6th grade boys, 7th grade boys, 8th grade boys, 9th boys, JV/Varsity boys, 6th grade girls, 7th grade girls, 8th grade girls, 9th grade girls, JV/Varsity girls AND elementary programs to have practice and games? I wouldn't be surprised if that alone wasn't enough of a reason to make any incoming coach pause.

Did they only get 3 practices a week because of the gym? I doubt that is true. Unless varsity boys basketball was unable to get in their practices, is it a factor in their performance?

NKAC is the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference. It is split into three divisions, with Division I being the big school division. Division II is comprised of Holmes, Holy Cross, Newport, NCC, St. Henry, Lloyd, Highlands, Brossart, and Beechwood. Division II teams are required to play each other once a year, rotating home and away on alternate years.

Division III is comprised of Bellevue, Calvary, Latin, Ludlow, Heritage, Dayton, Villa, and Silver Grove. Each team is required to play each other home and away each season.

 

You can see why Beechwood wanted to escpape DIvision III, BUT Division II is loaded with talented teams, and the Red and White Tigers have struggled to compete. A win over Lloyd was this year's Beechwood's team only win in D-II. In 2011-12 the Tigers defeated Newport, but lost to Lloyd, giving them a combined 2-14 record in the division in their two years as members.

 

As previous posters have stated, they are between a rock and a hard place.

Yes ONE in which went on to be a DIII All-American. Shumate had some talent but his kids also were confidant and believe in what he was telling them. Very good coach in my Opinion

You commented in your post about the problem with one gym for the entire school and I replied to your post asking if the one gym prevented the team from getting practice time. You've just proven mine. If it is not enough for the entire school, it is not enough for the varsity. The players have gone through the program with one gym, which often limited them to ONE practice a week as middle schoolers and even freshman. You really think that does not affect them as varsity players?

 

You also claimed this program did not need "rebuilt" when Miller took over. Are you aware that in Shumate's final season the Tigers ONLY won their 14 division III games?

I don't care for Bulleit. I drink Benchmark exclusively these days. It is cheap cheap cheap but it tastes the best to me.

I agree FI, in my opinion they need to hire someone who teaches so their is that presence in the building, if not a solid AAU coach would be my next choice. This is going to be a tough sell to anyone other than a young coach trying to get his foot in the head coaching door.

I know I am poking the bear with this question, but I was hoping the Guru could explain what he means by “the program is setup for failure”. Is it because they play a Division II schedule? I know it’s not an apples comparison (and I stress that it’s not apples to apples) but boys’ football, baseball + girls volleyball and soccer don’t seem to be complaining about playing those same schools. In fact, those same teams seem to be doing quite well.

 

Also, it’s my guess that Suzy Wera (AD) wants to give each sport every chance to succeed. It could just be that she feels this is her year to make the personnel changes to give them that chance. This happens all the time in the corporate world – (1) a new business leader comes in (2) evaluates what he/she inherited (3) makes the changes that he/she feels is necessary.
