Bishop Brossart 2013

To be honest I have character issues with the head coach. When he left Ryle it was celebrated by the kids. He on a number of occasions called kids derogative names. Made players call out other players for missing blocks during games, ( public humiliation )etc. He was very demoralizing for Ryle and had allot to do with some kids never returning to the program. IMO he was abusive to the kids. Not saying a coach can't yell or get mad, but he was non constructive and demeaning. If brossart has number problems now, I think he will be the death of the program.

They already have had issues with players quitting, but they came back. But still they are being pushed to that level. Right or wrong I don't know there are alot of reason it could come to that. I've talked to a few of the players and they all hesitated when I asked them what they thought of the new Coach. I just know it's hard to be competitive with low numbers to many play both ways by the 4th quarter it starts to show. All and all I wish them nothing but the best Good Luck BB

Not all have came back and one was told that if he played summer baseball and could not commit to all the practices, then he could not play football.

Just curious, do other football programs allow kids to miss football practice for summer baseball?

That is a tough call IMO. But in a small school that is struggling with their program, I would be inclined to allow a kid to miss. But you have to miss "the right way". If you have nothing going on for 3 days in summer baseball and the football team is working on those days, I want you at football practice, not sitting on the couch working out your thumbs on video games. There would be a good discussion and a plan we all agree on worked out.

Bottom line is they have to work with kids that are doing other sports. Take some advice from NCC on how they do it. Look at the Breds' success and look at the names of those kids. It's the same kids on multiple teams being successful at NewCath. Brossart can do this too if the coaches/kids can work this out...Hope they can last long enough to get back to A ball to be more competitive.

Yes.

I somewhat agree that the Brossart Football program is on life-support, but the light at the end of the tunnel is the move back to Class 1-A, where we might be able to gain an advantage or at least an attraction.

IF we can be somewhat competitive this season, and raise the level of play to where we can compete eyeball to eyeball with Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, etc., then there is a very real opportunity for us to carve out a niche among NCC/Campbell Co who have a plethora of kids dressing but not contributing.

IF Brossart can make the move back to Class 1-A, achieve a winning record on an annual basis, make the playoffs and go deep into the post-season, then I do think that our program might be attractive to those standing on the sidelines and not contributing at the aforementioned schools.

Perhaps then, when our enrollment numbers again put us in position to make the jump back to Class 2-A, we will be more suitably equipped and better positioned to make that jump.

It is vitally important that the players in the program remain in the program, and that the kids in the Junior High Colts program feed into, and remain in, the Brossart High School program.

I have no horse in this race (pun intended) but when I took a quick glance at the enrollment numbers linked in another thread (and again below) and see a 1A school with 215 boys (Mayfield) and a 2A school with 162 boys (Brossart) or 53 less (over 30% less) I believe Brossart's argument during the last classification that it should have been classified as a 1A school had a lot of merit (particularly combined with the competitive disadvantage of it being a new program to boot). Sorry to beat a :deadhorse: (again pun intended).

Kentucky High School Athletic Association Enrollment Reports

Brossart's football camp starts tonight for grades 1 - 8 and continues through Friday. I'm guessing this is the 1st camp they've offered for football so it looks like they are moving in the right direction as far as trying to draw kids into the program. Camp will be at St. Mary's soccer fields which is a HUGE deal, IMO. In the past, the Boosters have not been too keen on letting anyone use the field except for St. Mary soccer team practices. Good to see.

If, If, If......

Here's an idea, how about classifing football programs based on average roster sizes over the course of 3-5 years. HHS wouldn't like that, that would mean being put in trinitys class. You know what that means, no more state titles.

Would def help some of these smaller programs that field 25-40 boys.

Just an idea.

Highlands has in the past. Going back a few years but Dale was coaching. Hamblin missed a whole lof of summer workouts (including most of two a days) to play summer baseball but started in Game 1. Some years later, Drew Simons missed about a week of two a days to play in an AAU basketball tournament or two. While I'm sure Dale would have rather had them practicing football, he understood their desire to participate in other sports. Me too.

It's an idea that's been brought up before, discussed at a high level and dismissed.

The primary and foremost goal of high school athletics is participation. If all the platitudes of high school athletics are true (you know: life lessons, good for academics, etc.), thus justifying the expenditure of tax dollars on high school athletics, adults should do everything within their powers to increase participation.

Unfortunately, I can assure you that if classification was based on roster size, there would be many a coach in Ky that would run off players or cut them to make sure his team ended up in a lower classification, thus hurting not helping participation numbers.

So you reward the bad coaches at the larger schools who run kids off? That seems like the most unfair system imaginable. Also, what keeps a coach from reporting inaccurate numbers? I've got 50 kids on my roster at the start of the year but 65 magically show up for week 1.

And it still wouldn't work because several big schools with good athletes still don't have roster numbers. Exhibit A - Holmes. How would Brossart fair against Holmes...cause they'd probably be in the same class. Many teams have under 45 on their roster. And many have great athletes on their teams, just not a ton of football interest in the entire school. But the ones that play are good.

Not sure what 91 has against HHS, but he always has to go there. And for his info, HHS used to play up a class for many years and still won championships. I don't see many schools asking to play up these days. It changed a few years back when the state mandated that everyone must play in the class they fall in to.

Grouping schools into classes based solely on male student population is ridiculous. Some other metric needs to be included, such as the number of open enrollment athletes on a varsity roster. A program with 20 open enrollment athletes in their program should not be on field with a program with no open enrollment athletes. Period.
