Yes. It's brutal. In Vegas all of the Harrah's properties I've been too if the table minimum was $25 they stayed on soft 17, but that isn't the case here.

Yes and no. Over time your expected return will go down significantly as your giving a up solid winning hand for something that is unknown. Your best chance is against a dealer 6, but even then, you go from winning on average $70 per every $100 bet to $43 per every $100 bet, a drop of nearly 50% over the long haul. Obviously, you can do well any one time or two, but over time its a bad play. The only time to legitimately increase your expected return by splitting 10's is in 1 or two deck blackjack when the count is way in your favor and the likelihood of receiving another face is high. It's almost impossible to count cards in multi deck blackjack, so I stand by never splitting 10's in a multi deck game.

 

The other situation where splitting 10's make sense late in tournament play when your one hand of 20 isn't enough to overtake the leader, but 2 winning hands would be.

 

I guess I could look this up, but do you know the odds of doubling down on a black jack against a 5 or 6? My friends and I double in that situation if a table is paying 6/5 instead of 3/2.

If don't know just ask whoever at the table who looks like they know what they are doing or ask the dealer, most will tell you.

I usually use a basic strategy card. You can buy a set (one for each table scenario) online or in many casino gift shops. The dealers don't care if you use one, but it's polite to ask anyway. Just don't put it on the table; they don't like that at all.
