March 10, 201313 yr Pinnacle owns River Downs and the Beltarra Casino. We have had season reserve seats in the clubhouse for decades. When Pinnacle bought RD, things went down hill fast. The first thing they did was eliminate the xtra large sodas because people would sip on them all day long without the need to purchase more drinks. For years we went there and would buy a bottle of water with a glass of ice on the way in. So one day we went in and bought the bottle of water and the cashier said "2 dollars for the water and 4 dollars for the glass of ice."So I then went to the concession stand in the grandstand, and asked for a glass of ice. The lady said "we can't give you a glass of ice,but if you buy a bottle of water ,you can get the glass of ice free". This is a true story!!! When I got home I wrote a letter about my experience with the glass of ice issue. After a short time the glass of ice was "free" again. Imagine that. I haven't been to River Downs in a long time; at least 12 years. If that happened to me, I would likely never go back.
March 10, 201313 yr Well went last Night and was very impressed with how nice it is but not impressed with how they werent prepared for the Crowds. 4 Bartenders working where they needed atleast 6. No cocktail waitresses serving tables. Only $25 min BlackJack tables and terrible cards. It was worth the experience but IMO not worth it. I only lost 3 bills and it wasnt the grocery money like it looked for others. Also, we pulled Into the garage on first floor and hopped on elevator getting right in. My buddy and his wife parked on anotger level, walked aroubd to the front entrance and there was a 3 hr wait to get in. Not sure what that was all about. Someone told me there were homeless people walking around during the daytime hours. Didnt see Anyone winning in the 2 hrs I was there.
March 10, 201313 yr These cards are helpful but just ask the dealer what to do, they know these cards by heart. These strategy cards say always split aces and eights, even if the dealer has a face card showing. You should always assume that the dealer has a 10 or face card down. So, if the dealer has a card up as a ten, then you assume the dealer has 20,correct. Now, if you split 8"s and get 2 ten value cards, then you have two 18's versus the dealers 20. You are now playing 2 hands ,instead of 1 against the dealers 20. I personally don't split 8"s against the dealers up card if it is a 10 value card or an ace, I just take a hit and hope for the best.I"d rather lose 1 hand to a 20 ,not 2, but that's just me. Good luck !! There are 5 good cards the dealer could have and 2 decent cards the dealer could have to go with their 10. There are 6 cards you wouldn't want the dealer to have. That's why you split 8's. Just b/c you play as if though the dealer has a 10 buried doesn't mean it's there.
March 10, 201313 yr Gambling is not my thing, plus throw in the location. Not happening. Smart man, not mine either but I always give it a go once or twice every couple years and since it is new I tried it out and wont go back more than likely. House always wins.
March 10, 201313 yr Have fun and enjoy yourself, don't lose more than you can afford. The house always wins because too many people have no clue! If you know what you are doing you can hold your own against the house and sometimes make some money.
March 11, 201313 yr Been there twice and left with some of their money both times. That said, I'm sure I'll get gutted next trip. I've already gambled at Horseshoe more times than I've gambled at Hollywood (Argosy) and Rising Star (Grand Victoria) combined.

Good luck !! I have read ALOT about BJ odds and strategies and play BJ often. Statistically, you should definitely split 8's against anything, even a 10 up. I agree that it is not a pleasant thing to do, but the odds say to do it. The dealer is only going to have a 10 in the hole 30% of the time and you know he does not have an ace before you split. I would be surprised if the Horseshoe offers surrender (pulling half your bet back and conceding defeat). I have not seen any local casinos offer it, only Vegas casinos. If surrender IS offered, that may be preferable to splitting 8's against a 10.

March 11, 201313 yr I've been trying out a system (on practice) whereby I bet really big after losing three hands in a row. Otherwise, I don't change my bet. Can anyone tell me how stupid this idea is? I would not call it stupid. Just realize the next cards don't know if you have won the last three (or more hands) or lost them. Over time you will win a little less than 50% of the hands you are dealt, assuming you know what you are doing. However, a 5 or 10 or even 50 hand sample is too small for their to be any correlation between the last few hands' results and the next hand's results. Same theory on the roulette wheel. Just because the last 5 spins have come up black does not mean there is better chance the next spin will be red than if the previous 5 spins were all red.
