I lived in Cincinnati for 2 months until someone got murdered at the car wash where I would wash my car. A few blocks from the house I was renting.

At the casino or near by? If it happens to a patron, it'll drive people away for sure.

No, sometimes it's worse. Let's not pretend Over the Rhine is Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. I get the concern, Over the Rhine is pretty much in the casino's front yard. I frequent Cincy, most of the time it's fine, sometimes, there's trouble and not mild trouble.

Wasn't the corner of Liberty & Vine declared the most dangerous neighborhood in America a few years ago?

* zero issues, fights, drama, or raised voices. It was crowded, but not crazy.

 

* parking garage had security, but honestly, I never felt unsafe. I cashed out several big bills at the cashier, was wearing a suit, and no one gave me a 2nd look.

 

* sorry this thread wreaks to me of people from northern ky not used to a ton of diversity. I mean no offense, but that is my opinion on some of these comments.

 

 

You were there in the afternoon, try going on a night, possibly a weekend night. As far as the comments about security, I am in that type of business and used to it, tons of training for it too. As well as when I am in town I help a friend out doing the security at his business that is open at night, caters to the younger crowd, and next to UC, which as you know at times is not the best area to be in. So, I see the worries that some have about security that people have are vaild.

 

The Ohio Casino Control Commission even said last week they had issues with security and surveillance of the casino. They didn't say publicly what issues they had, but I found out and all points are what patrons have questioned.

There is no reason anyone should feel unsafe anywhere in the generally vicinity of the casino and downtown during the day. At night you are also completely safe but must take precautions just as you would anywhere in a major city at night. The idea that people don’t want to go to the Horseshoe because of a perceived safety risk is quite common, but I would argue that you’re just as likely be robbed in the parking garage at Hollywood than at Horseshoe. I personally haven’t been there yet but will check it out next week when I’m back in town

As I talked about in my post, there aren't plans to do that at this point, but they are entertaining the thought of running shuttles back and forth to the Banks.

I can understand all the worries about crime, but really, I'm not concerned. If you play it smart, namely not being alone, pay attention, and carry yourself with confidence, you'll be fine. If you alone, drunk, and calling attention to the fact that you have money on you, you may attract attention from an undesirable. There are plenty of stories of folks getting robbed regardless of where a casino is located. And there are plenty of Casino's in not so nice areas....Atlantic City comes to mind. According to reports I've seen, AC had 12 homicides in 2011, and over 29 million visitors. That's a pretty low rate. So, while it is going to happen, something would have happened near there regardless of whether the Casino is there or not, and the Casino, probably won't cause a rise in those incidents.

In Vegas they feel much differently than you on that issue. I doubt that there are very many people here on BGP dumb enough to play over $25 a hand...unless they are ridiculously rich.

 

It's very easy to sit down with $100 at a table with a $25 minimum and play for a couple hours....At least if you know what the hell you're doing that is.

I would say just the opposite. Cincy folks would never cross the river to KY and I thought for sure Newport on the levy would die a slow death. That was until Timmy Thomas got shot, riots broke out, bars closed and cincinatians were left with no options at that time. Wasn't that bar district on Main street, is that near the new casino?

No, it's not. However, it still isn't the safest place to put a casino, if you ask me. It is nothing like when I worked over at Music Hall the year of the riots and the year after. That was like working in a war zone w/ all of the gangs coming in from Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland to fill the power vacuum left by the police reducing their presence in the community after the Thomas shooting. I never was bothered and never had any issues with my property. My concern is though, that if patrons can not find adequate parking, they are walking targets a couple of blocks north of the casino. That's pretty close for me. I know that there are stories of people getting mugged, or worse, tailed home from the Indiana casinos. I just think that the percentages will be higher at Horseshoe.

They run parallel. Two blocks apart.

Go to Hollywood on a Saturday night and you won't find anything close to $5 minimum. It's opening week, of course the tables are going to be at high minimums. Table games are completely pointless to play for less than the $25 minimum anyways.

 

Every casino has issues with security/safety.

 

Give it a couple months and the place will be running smoothly. It's ridiculous to think it's going to go smoothly right out the gate.

 

Just saw thier advertisement on TV last night. I think it said They were the first casino to allow betting. They have been doing it forever. It is not their first newly opened casino. No excuse for not being ready for prime time. It is what casinos are known for.

There were quite a few people that left Indiana and didn't make it in their house with their winnings.

 

That is true, however they did eventually catch the responsible party in that. Also keep in mind that the neighborhood surrounding the IN Casino's is quite different than the Horseshoe which I will imagine will have higher crime rates involving the casino and the surrounding area.

 

As far as the $25 min table games I think is a joke. I used to play a ton of table games but have since stopped since the min has gone up at many casionos outside Vegas and is why I strictly play poker now at the area casino's. With the reviews so far I think I will stick to the Indiana casinos for now unless I hear major improvements at the Horseshoe. That is actually a little disheartening seeing how you would think they would have better reviews coming out after the grand opening, but Cincinnati is so screwed up and led by a bunch of bafoons in the first place so this is no surprise to me.
