Foul was on #20. Two steps after the whistle #34 fouls him very hard from 3/4 behind. Technical is the right call and if it were earlier in the year he might have been tossed.

 

That was a bunch of fun.

 

General thoughts from the region final.

NKU is the place to hold this event, but they have to do something about the ticket sales. One of my friends drove onto campus about 15 minutes til 6 and he saw the line for tickets stretching across the bridge. He just kept on driving.

 

Holmes and South Oldham are two district runner ups that advanced to the Sweet 16.

 

There are no parochial schools in the Sweet 16 this year.

 

Tough turnaround for the 9th Region having to play on Wednesday afternoon.

 

It was interesting to see the adjustments made by both staffs. Holmes tried some zone but CCH shot them out quick. Likewise for CovCath in the early 4th quarter.

 

For the second time in as many days, Holmes heated up the ball in the second half and got teams out of their offense, forcing CovCath to start their offense out higher than they wanted. This led to CovCath taking quicker shots. Quicker shots means more time for Holmes to get the ball up court before a defense sets.

 

This was a difficult game to officiate. Overall, I thought the crew did a decent job. One thing that I like, is the 16th Region will call handchecks. That is what got CovCath in trouble in the first half. Literally reaching out with the hand on Bolden or reaching out as he went by. There was no disputing those calls. I thought the 5th foul on Bolden was ridiculous and even saw the replay on the news. That was not a foul. I thought the technical, foul on the Tobler kid was a a mugging.

 

Coach Listerman lost his mind for a bit, but it was hilarious to see all of the CovCath fans giving him heck as he was leaving the floor. Literally fans were practically about ready to climb down after him. Coach Ruthsatz was fired up too. Encouraging the fans as he left the floor.

 

Congratulations to Holmes. Beating NCC, Cooper and Cov Cath all within 6 days was impressive.

 

Good opportunity for Bolden to put his show on display at Rupp Arena for all to see. Great opportunity for him and the Bulldogs.

I was another casualty of the long line... turned around and went home and listened. Figured the long line at 5:55 meant I was missing the entire first quarter and probably most of the first half. I'm glad we have a facility like BOK to handle crowds like that, but really, if you can't handle that size crowd any better than that - the line was all the way down the walkway and across the bridge and into the parking lot - you'll never be able to fill the place up...

Congratulations to the Bulldogs.

It was a gritty and gutty performance, especially after Englemon and Bolden fouled out.

The Herndon kid stepped in and nailed two straight free throws as if he was a veteran at the line.

Quinton Chames was terrific tonight and you would be hard pressed to find one player who has progressed from game one to the region final, as much as Chames has.

This region was blessed with four excellent teams this year. In addition, all four have outstanding coaches. Coach Brannen, Coach Sullivan, Coach Ruthsatz and Coach Booher are all top notch coaches.

I think in general that is why it is so hard to win the 9th Region. Great coaches who will have their teams prepared and execute and make changes to their game plans.

Ruth with nice drive, set up Hepp for a hero shot from the left baseline from about 8 feet, rimmed out.

 

Poor Hepp will replay that shot in his mind until he takes the final dirt nap.

I wonder how many people missed the start of the game due to the huge crowd? I got there at 4:40 and there were already 100 people with their tickets.

 

My son took a photo on his phone from the road and it was a huge line that extended back to the parking lot and the time of the pic was 6:05pm. Basically the game was being played and people were standing out in the cold. BOK may want to figure something out there in order to get people in the game quicker. I bet those people missed half the game.

Is TOG on suicide watch? I'd like to see some stats.

 

Kudos to the CovCath internet guys for doing a fantastic job during the tournament. I was very frustrated as I'm sure others were when we lost reception with 1:25 to play but from what Mustang stated in the update thread, the cell phone activity in BOK must have been the culprit.

 

Congrats to the Colonels for a fine season and especially Frederick, Tobler and Pauly. All very good HS players and had great careers. I watched my son battle against Fred and Pauly all through AAU ball and those are a couple of tough kids. Fred was always a great shooter and Pauly has been carrying the lunch pale since day 1. Best of luck in their bright futures.

I went over & spoke with Coach L, shook his hand, told him congrats & he gave me a hug. I was with two other CovCath guys that did the same, so be careful with blanket statements.

 

Agree I saw several do the same. Some people like to stir things up making statements I guess!

I made the comment once Englemon went out and Holmes went small how much pressure was on Chames to rebound and contest shots. He did this and had a huge tip bucket. Well done.

 

With Englemon out, it seemed odd that CCH would leave Tobler out of the game. He was doing a go job on Chames all night. Would have created a mismatch for Schuh's defender and gave CCH the rebounding advantage.

When Englemon fouled out Holmes was up about 7. CCH went to a trapping full court press with more intensity. I believe they needed to get turnovers, which they did with their quickest on the floor. It worked all except hitting the open shots at the end. You have to give up something to do that.

On the ticket situation, could you have bought tickets to the game online? That may be a solution right there. I wish I had looked into it instead of standing in the long line. I thought they might delay the start of the game again like they did on Tuesday but they didn't. Tipoff was at 6:06 on my watch.

 

In a ticket complaint, the BOK didn't even have all the ticket windows running. There was one that was closed when I bought my tickets. In defense of the BOK, this crowd was 2,000+ larger than any previous 9th region title game so that made it difficult to know how big the crowd would be.

Yes the Tobler foul was hard but he was clearly going for the ball. A Technical was not merited in that instance IMO.

Listerman got what he deserved - what kind of reaction do you think the Holmes fans would have given to Ruthsatz if he ran down to the Holmes bench ranting and pointing fingers?

Pauly made the smartest play of the night driving to the lane seeing Bolden in front of him with four fouls.

Great game by both teams - a true heavyweight match that could have gone either way. Lets face it - CCH got lucky with the half court shot in the districts - Holmes got equally lucky with CCH missing two open shots in the closing seconds to win the regionals.

I was listening on Ihigh. Didn't lose the feed. I do have a suggestion. Give the score and time in game more often. Many times they said...."It is a 8 point lead". Would be better to give the score and who is leading.
