G1 that is funny but Wilder and Southgate at one time could go to Highlands for free no charge, not a bad idea a lot of the kids end up at Highlands, add on to the School and put the Football field down in the hole make it like Elder.

If we are talking Campbell County consolidation - the KDE need not stop at a Newport/Bellevue/Dayton merger. How about Silver Grove and Southgate?

 

Silver Grove has less than 200 kids K- 12. I know there is great pride in the little river town, but this is ridiculous. Makes no fiscal sense. The entire system could be absorbed into the Campbell County District with out any needed infrastructure. The administrative savings would be tremendous.

 

Southgate doesn't even have a high school. An independent school system that is K- 8. How can that be in today's world of consolidation? Is there another independent school system in the state that doesn't have a secondary school?

 

The kids in Silver Grove also miss out on some opportunities athletically and especially academically that they would get if they became part of Campbell County schools.

It sounds like the school board has other plans for the valley in the future. Originally it was where the Geothermal was going to go for the High School renovations but now maybe an actual structure with underneath parking like the middle school will be the future plans(wish list). The football field isn't going anywhere and I'm almost positive Death Valley isn't big enough for a full size football field. I can remember running the 80 yard dash faster than most people could run the 100 dash during my SCIT years if you get my drift....:thumb:

Does it makes sense in these areas to have an independent school system without a high school? I've lived in N Ky my entire life and have no idea why Southgate Independent does not have a high school. As far as I know it has never had grades 9 - 12. Is this true?

Not sure. I know Science Hill is in a rural part of northern Pulaski County, originally distant from Somerset, although not now with the new road. Perhaps their tax base can't afford to run a K-12. Not sure.

 

East Bernstadt was a colony for Swiss settlers to the area and was always somewhat separated from the rest of the area. While the school has no religious/national ties today, perhaps the history is a driving force for remaining open.

 

And finally, since this is a sports thread, maybe those schools know they would struggle to compete athletically at the high school level (and also can't offer as many sports), so they forward the students on to the county high school for that reason.

A nice gym with parking underneath. We could also build the bubble for year round soccer and football conditioning. Maybe a pool? All that's needed is a little cash.

Southgate school is booming in # thanks to the apartments built on Mooch Road. Newport school system is awful. They just seem to be pushing kind through to not have to deal with them and then at some point the kid is so far behind just gives up. I know the HS was sending kids back to the jr level. That place is a mess from top to bottom.

The real question involving this thread should be................How many years before the Newdaybell school starts dominating Highlands and CovCath in 4A football since combined they would be a 4A school?

There's not 5 guys combined in those 3 schools right now that would start at Highlands.

The Newdaybell GreenTigerCats returned the opening kickoff to the Highlands 40 yard line and scored 4 plays later on a 7 yard run on their way to dominating the Bluebirds 42-14 at Newport Stadium Friday night. The GreenTigerCats improve to 9-0 on the season with only a non-district game left against 1A Newport Central Catholic before heading into the playoffs as the the #1 seed in the 4A district with home field throughout the playoffs.

NewCath needs that dirty Kmart to go out of business and buy up all that land tear everything down and build a sweet football-soccer-track facility. Put a bunch of trees and a fence to keep it all blocked from the road. It could be really nice.
