Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?

Featured Replies

Dunbar has been a mess for a long time, nothing surprises me there.

I would assume Chuck could bring in all the assistants he wants, I don't think the current administration at Boone has much loyalty to any of the current coaches.

The problem with bringing guys in is that you are restricted because of teacher position openings.

With Chuck Smith, dominate their class to start and eventually the Birds too if the Birds step to the plate.

Only if it coincides with Mueller's retirement and with Weinrich and Turner there, I doubt even then. Competitive? Certainly. Dominate? Not in this lifetime.

I will go on record right now on Chuck Smith. If Chuck Smith has or does in fact apply for the job and Boone doesn't hire him the people doing the hiring should be fired. This hire would be a no brainer.

Agreed:thumb: If he is allowed the support then yes, but Chuck going into the interview will know if it is a good job or not. Cause he going to have a list of demands, if the top demands can not be delivered then OUT THE DOOR he will go.

Looking at KSBIT and The Boone County Assessment it looks like over 1.5 million dollar assessment coming ouch

Ok I give what does this mean?

Boone County is not Boone County anymore. The closer it gets to being an "inner city" school the less relevant it becomes in football. If you told me he was going to Ryle, Cooper or Conner, I might agree with you.

Is Chuck Smith really that good? He won a couple titles in AA. Those teams were fortunate they were down in Class from the Jared and Gino Highlands teams. No way they beat Highlands. Then Boyle moved up to AAA. He catches a lucky break because Highlands is in a rare 3 year lean cycle. Highlands recovers and beats him twice his last year when he had a bunch of returning players including his son at QB. He then bolted for UK. UK was terrible and he wasn't able to do enough to help Joker keep his job. Good coach, nice record, but hardly the savior.

If he goes to Boone, I see a bunch of 6-4 and 7-3 seasons. Maybe a rare 8-2 with exits to Trinty, Scott Co, or X in the playoffs every year. Basically nothing different from what we see now. I do think he could avoid the real bad years like 2-8 and 4-6.

Your first paragraph shows how little you know of those Chuck Smith teams.

1. Jared was never QB when Boyle won their 2 Class AA titles ('99 and '00). FWIW, try checking the Boyle County rosters from those two seasons and get back with me.

2. The 3 year down cycle as you call it, is a convenient cop-out. Again, check the rosters and see what they were doing against some of the best in the state. Particularly in '03 when they beat the Birds twice, Danville (Class A Champs) and Tighlman (Hunter Cantwell and Joe Casey) on the road.

3. The '04 season returned Brandon Smith but much of the Boyle lines were gutted from graduation from the year before and HHS picked up a great leader in Mike Mitchell to go with the other great players they had. Birds were the better team in '04, no shame in that.

Chuck Smith is that good. But can he capture lightning in a bottle again. Don't know. But if Boone County got him it would be a great hire.

Winning 5 state championships in a row, 6 straight appearances in the finals at a school without a previous state championship is impressive. 6 years in a row can't be attributed to a handful of good players. In a school with no previous titles, 9 consecutive classes of kids @ Boyle played in the finals.

The opportunity to coach LBs in the SEC is a long shot, once in a lifetime deal for a HS coach. I don't see it as bolting at all. I think he would have been crazy not to do it.

In regards to UK, he was part of some very good success and sent his kids to the next level. If he had become the DC, maybe UK would have enjoyed more success. I think so.

If Boone can get Chuck Smith, I agree with those that believe they will be very good.

I will admit that Coach Smith is a good friend of mine. But, after being around him for 25+ years, I am more than convinced that yes, he is an outstanding football coach. Schemes, teaching fundamentals, and working with people-he is one of the best in all 3 categories.

The Birds weren't very good by Highlands standards from 01-03. No way Boyle beats Gino's teams in 99 and 2000. They were playing demolishing good teams and playing tight/close games with big schools like Elder, etc while Boyle was beating directional county.

This is why I don't think Chuck Smith will be back coaching in high school again. Smith is a great coach, but coming back to high school coaching and not duplicating the success he had at Boyle Co. those last 6-7 years would really be anti climatic for both him and the school that hires him. It is better to be the "ghost of greatness" for the rest of your existance than to prove you're a mortal.

All good coaches have one thing in common and that is they love a challenge and to pprove they are great coaches is when they have an opportunity to take a program annd turn it into a winner. So I don't think chuck or any coach who still wants to coach will let past success be a reason to turn down another opportunity if they still wwant to coach.

Ru, I know your excited about the prospect of what might be, but don't let that cloud your better judgement. Use your training. Stay calm. Think things through. Rational calculated decisions.

I know that you are aware that Boyle did not become Boyle overnight. Circumstances at Boone are not what they were at Boyle 15, 20 years ago. Boyle then was a one high school district with an administration hell bent on building a winning program. Brand new facilities and support in every imaginable way. Today's Boone county is nothing like that.

If Chuck is looking to find that type of situation at Boone he will be sorely disappointed.

What Chuck will find is a chance to compete annually. In good years he will make a deep playoff run. If Chuck spins magic, in the right year he can compete with the likes of T,X,& H.

A lot of this is simply NOT TRUE. First, Boyle's facilities were not new. Heck, they just got the turf 3? years ago. Before that, Boyle's field was probably the worst in the area. They still don't even have a fieldhouse, for crying out loud. Aside from the turf, their facilities are not very good, still.

And they were not, nor have they ever been, in a one school district. Have you never heard of Danville High School? By the way, for all of Coach Smith's run, Danville had a 300 win coach that was winning State Championships, as well. The thing that a lot of people don't know about Danville is that the Danville Independent School District actually extends beyond the city's borders.

You are right about the administration wanting a winner. But, I think Smith would have to be convinced of that before he takes ANY job.
