Has Chuck Smith applied at Boone County?

Featured Replies

I polled 17 High School Head Coaches yesterday on who is the greatest Head coach in Ky history. I got 14 for Chuck, 2 for Dale Mueller, and 1 Joe Jaggers.

There is so much stupidity in this thread it's not even funny. Boyle Co was one of te worst teams in state before Chuck took that job. I remember my HS was beating them 49-0 at halftime (and they weren't very good) te year before he got there. They were pitiful. He took a job in a town where there was a perennial powerhouse right down the road. This was back in 93....Danville was a top 5 team in state those years. He goes there and wins 5 in a row (which had never been done at the time). That's not at HHS, Danville, Trinity, etc.....at BOYLE.

I have prob more respect for HHS than anyone (good friends with some of their staff) but to use the 'lean years' mantra is a cop out!

As someone who has been involved with coaching for over 15 years you would be hard presses to find a COACH who was around during CS's tenure that won't say he was the best. Whether he could rebuild what he did at BC is anyone's guess....but I will guarantee you they will be MUCH improved.

Who is the greatest head coach ever? That is a very tough one to answer. I did not have the pleasure to see Smith coach, but I do have to say Mueller is the best I have ever seen in person, It is amazing what he does with the players he has. I am not familiar with Jaggers, what is his background? I also think depending on the location of the coaches you question will also affect what coach they pick. I do not know who the best is but I do wish we had more coaches like Mueller and Smith in the state of KY.

All more than deserving to be in the discussion, and all have valid backing for why they should be.

Chuck Smith- Well, it's what this thread has turned into. No doubt he is a great coach, and one of the all time bests. You don't come into a program like Boyle County was at the time, build it into what he lead and not be in the discussion. 5 in a row with 6 straight appearances. If you don't put that in discussions of who is at the top, you're crazy.

Dale Mueller- He took over in '95 that was already one of Kentucky's elites, and has turned them in THE Public School program in the state of Kentucky. He has won 10 titles since '95, including the last 6. I think that is right? 10. If not, I know that will be corrected by the masses out here. :) That list of titles is just going to keep on growing as well, because I don't see anybody or anything slowing this machine down. I just don't. They dominated 4A this year, and all you heard was how Highlands was "down."

Joe Jaggers- The winner of 5 State Titles and currently 6th or 7th on the All-Time wins list. What's impressive about Jaggers' IMO, is the fact that not only did he win multiple state titles. But, he won them at places that NEVER won titles before he came, and they haven't won one since he left (Trigg County- '71 & '72; Fort Knox- '83, '88 & '90). He finished up his career at North Hardin after the '98 season. While he never won a 4A Title at North Hardin, he got them to Two State Semi appearances ('91 vs. St X and '94 vs. Trinity). North Hardin hadn't been to a State Semi before, and hasn't since he left.

Sam Harp - I can't believe he isn't in the discussion more. Not only is he in the pack on the All Time Wins list, but he, like Mueller took over a state power and turned them into a juggernaut. From '88- '06, Danville had 10 State Final appearances, and won 7 of them; for those counting. He and Danville won titles spanding over 3 decades!

There are so many different intangibles to separate when determining the best.

^^^ Birdseye, the "you're crazy" comment about Chuck Smith is for those on here pouring glasses of hater-ade like he hasn't done anything or not worthy of the discussion. I'm sure you probably knew that, but just wanted to clarify.

Former Beechwood coach Mike Yeagle certainly deserves to be in the discussion of best coaches.

I agree. The 5 year ( it was 5, right?) run they had in the early-mid 90's was a first of it's kind. They were Boyle County before Boyle County in that sense.

^^ I want to correct my post about about the coaches I listed. Mueller took before '94, that's when Duffy took the Henderson job. For some reason, I always think it's '95.

Coach Mueller has 11 titles. 96,98,99,2000, 04, 07,08,09,10,11,12. Also got upset in the finals in 95 and 03. That is 13 trips to the finals in 18 seasons. That blows Chuck away. As i stated earlier, Chuck benefitted from Highlands having a rare lean cycle after the 2000 season.

HHS did not get upset in 2003. Boyle was the better team by far that season. Proved it twice that season. The more you post, the more it shows that you weren't around those years or you have a very poor memory.

You made my point. Highlands wasn't Highlands good in 2003. Usually any time Highlands loses it's an upset. Highlands doesn't lose to Boyle anymore. Highlands also renews contracts.

OUCH.............................

Highlands also renews contracts.
That's not what St X said after they put a running clock on the Birds in 2005 and beat them 2 Td's in 2006.

I hope Chuck gets the Boone job and rattles off 6 straight in 6A. Then I'll be on the Chuck wagon.

Where is he now? I havent heard his name in a long time, is he still coaching?
