The Dawgs win this one by 10. Holmes has faced size already in playing Cooper and their bigs were able to stay out of foul trouble even though big Lou was playing on one ankle they were able to control of the bangers of Hathorn and Shelton. Additionally they were able to weather the storm of the Cooper shooters McNeil and Collins who got real hot and gave them a 5 point lead in the fourth.

 

The bottom line is NCC has no one to keep up with Bolden and he will get to the lane with ease. After watching what he did to CC I don't see anyone from NCC stopping him unless they decide to double him which will cause other problems. Just my opinion but they athletism will take over in this one.

Cooper did a great job of forcing him down the side of the lane. That allowed them to get some help from the wing. The wing was able to help and still stay on his man (somewhat) because of pushing him away from the middle.

I see NCC playing that 3/2 zone with Seibert out top. His length is very disruptive. It allows the zone to extend. Bolden may be able to get some penetration, but the bigs of NCC do a nice job of keeping the penetration from getting to the rim.

 

I was surprised at the way Chames played low post defense. As has been said by others, he likes to show off his shot blocking ability. He allowed the ball into the post rather easily as if to invite the post move. If he does that with McDonald, Drew will have a field day. Drew will create contact and neutralize the shot blocking.

 

I like NCC in this one by 10.

I don't disagree that Ncc can win but I'd be extremely surprised if either team won by 10.

 

The biggest thing Newcath needs to do is weather the storm of Holmes runs because it is going to happen. They are capable of putting some serious runs on you where their defense will hold you 2 or 3 mins without scoring while they put a 10 or 15-0 run on you.

 

I fully expect both teams to come out fired up.

As has been stated, this one will be close, a toss up in my opinion. I believe Palmer and Beuter are the keys. If either is shooting well from the

3, it opens so much up for the rest of the team. That is difficult to predict, as everyone knows. NCC has the great inside/out game, while Holmes has three guys that can light it up from the 3. I'm like LB13, let 'em play and let's sit back and watch. This game is no more than bragging rights at this time. That's good but means nothing come toruney time.

Very interesting comment. I agree, there is a very good chance these two teams are going to meet again in the region. Hopefully the finals, because I believe they are the two best teams this year, but maybe before. From a coaching standpoint I would be more interested in mixing up defenses to see how the other responds in order to get a better game plan for a future meeting.

 

I wouldn't play entirely m2m or zone if I was either team. I would definitely mix it up.

Which is why I said Holmes will bring Schulte and McDonald out high and use ball screens/pick and rolls to use their quickness with Englemon and Chames.

 

Englemon is tough to stop once he gets going to the rim. Just ask anyone who has tried to step in front to draw a charge.

 

I'llhold off on predicting a winner because I really like both teams and their personnel.

 

I agree with the high ball screens. Regardless who guards Bolden, they aren't going to consistently keep him in front of him. If Holmes spreads the floor out correctly and penetrates and kicks I belive NCC will have a tough time guarding them man to man.

If Bolden can consisntely get into the paint, it's going to be tough for the Breds to stop his scoring and passing ability and a very good chance it will lead to NCC big's in foul trouble.

 

You have to realize Bolden is going to get his but you can't let him beat you with his passing ability which makes every person on Holmes team that much better. NCC must force tough angles while attacking the basket.

 

I believe the key for the bulldogs is to really force the tempo of the game. NCC isn't very deep and doesn't have much guard play after Pangallo and Bueter. I would like to see Holmes press and keep constant pressure on the NCC guards making it tought for them to enter the ball to the post.

 

The key for NCC is to utilize their bigs and establish a successful inside threat allowing them to get wide open kick outs for threes because Holmes is committing so may defenders to stop the post play. Although I do think the quickness of Holmes guards can have a serious effect on double downs if NCC isn't hitting from 3.

 

Ultimately, if the score gets into the 60's or above I like Holmes, but if it's in the 40's or low 50's I like NCC.

Exactly, when they have to, it's definitely not preferred especially against Holmes guards. Take a look at the CCH game and the result. Pangallo cramps up, Bueter apparently has the flu and doesn't do anything on the offensive end, 4 points maybe? You can consider Siebert somewhat of a guard for NCC, goes down with a sprained ankle. NCC made critical turn overs down the stretch and neither Dupont or Devoto was a factor in the game. If I remember correctly, they had a couple turnovers late in the 4th quarter. McDonald and Schulte carried the Breds in that game. NCC will have to get production out of their 3 guards Pangallo, Bueter, and Siebert in order to win this game. I don't look for Devoto or Dupont to be much of a factor in a game like this. Spot minutes and hopefully take care of the ball, maybe hit a shot or two. If the Breds are relying on them for anything more than that, they are in trouble.

If NCC can keep the score close, or better yet, play with a lead, then it will be a competitive game. If Holmes gets any kind of lead that requires NCC to play M2M, then look out! NCC's players cannot play man with Holmes and have a chance to keep it close. And I don't mean that NCC cannot mix things up and play some M2M here and there for a few possessions, to keep Holmes honest. I mean having to play M2M for an extended amount of time would not be in their favor.
