This will be a very interesting game to say the least. I am not sure if Holmes has faced a duo like McDonald and Shulte on the inside. The question is who will guard Bolden and keep him out of the middle of the floor. Siebert continues to take on the difficult assignments for NewCath with success, his length and athletic ability will be something new for Bolden to face. NewCath struggled with gaurding Hicks from Trinity...this will create an interesting evening of basketball in NKY! If NewCath can handle the fullcourt man to man pressure & both teams are knocking down shots from the outside...this game will be decided in the last few minutes if the big men for NewCath stay out of foul trouble. I like NewCaths chances...this will not be the first quick athletic team they have faced throughout the season!

Playing Bardstown 2 weeks ago will help with game speed. Bardstown didn't have as much talent as Holmes, though. They also don't have as good of a coach as Holmes has.

Holmes wins very close. 57-56

If and only if NewCath can stop Holmes in transition it will be a close game. Big floor and depth of guards will bother NewCath. Pangallo and Buther are the only two kids on NewCaths team that will be able to handle the presure. NewCath is the smarter basketball team both schools have great coaching staffs. Holmes will have to win the battle of the glass.

Holmes 5 has all the pieces. Strong PG. Strong shooting. Strong inside game.

 

I think Schulte will struggle in the post offensively against Englemon. Schulte thrives in open court and put backs. Back to the basket is not his strong point so I think he will not be a "go to" person on offense. Can he get offensive boards and stickbacks?

 

Chames and McDonald will be a strong matchup. Obviously, Drew is big and strong but Chames isn't a slouch. He's physically strong, too. Can Drew get him in foul trouble? Can Drew get good enough position to negate Chames' ability to block shots?

If Newcath tries to defend Holmes m2m, Holmes will pick and roll from the top of the key with Chames/Englemon (because McDonald isn't quick enough to defend the high post) and get a lot of easy looks around the rim. Newcath's best defensive game plan is to play zone and hope Holmes isn't hot from outside.

Here is the way I see the match ups:

 

Pangallo v Bolden-

If you're Grant Brannen, you have to roll the dice with your point guard. Unlike other teams, Holmes has multiple guys that can light you up from outside and create their own shot, therefor you can't use Seibert to try and key on Bolden. As much as I like Seibert, I don't know if he can defend Bolden either, if Grant does go that route. Covath tried to use Schuh on Bolden and he just put him in a blender or would kill Covcath down low with his driving and dishing ability. Pangallo is your best bet. He has played against Bolden before and knows him better than anyone else NCC has.

 

Beuter v Palmer

These two have went at it for the past two years and this year will be no different. One of these two will have to play well and shoot it well from outside for their team to win. Both can get hot from outside quick and that will open things up inside. Beuter is probably a little stronger than Palmer, but quickness, Palmer all day.

 

Seibert v Coston

You're probably thinking, why Seibert? Anyone who has seen Coston since the Covcath game knows exactly why you put Nick on BJ. Coston isn't big but has a unique skill set as he is too quick/strong for most 3's to defend going to the rim, but shoots well enough to keep a defense honest and keep you from playing off him. Defensively, Coston will struggle with Seibert's length if he plays down low. While Coston is likely stronger, he isn't as athletic and obviously not as long as Seibert.

 

Englemon v Schulte

This could end up being the best match up on the floor. Schulte obviously has a size advantage, but Englemon is easily one of the most athletic kids in the region and I'd put his strength up against anyone else in this region. Kid plays so hard and just bullies his way at both ends. On the flip side, Schulte crashes the boards hard so Englemon will have to box out. Schulte's length could bother Englemon some and cause him to alter shots, but I can guarantee Chris will go right at him. Schulte will have to play strong. He might have more size, but this is a tough match up for him.

 

Chames v McDonald

The key here is for Chames to deny, deny, deny. McDonald can't do anything without the ball in his hands, so Q will have to keep good position and not allow Drew to get position because once he gets so deep in the post, you might as well put the deuce up on the board if he gets the ball. At the other end. McDonald can't try to play Chames tight because if he does, he is quick enough to go by him and athletic enough to go over him.

 

The way I see it, these match ups are a lot more even than some of you realize. Newcath might have a size advantage, but Holmes has the athleticism, strength, and quickness to make up for that. I'd expect a lot of doubling down low when the ball is swung to McDonald's size. That is what they did to Campbell and overall it worked for a period of time. That puts a lot of pressure on the back court to shoot well from outside.

 

Holmes is the deeper team, so Newcath will have to avoid foul trouble.

Chames has the physical looks but he does not assert himself like he could. Several times against Highlands he tended to be out of position, push the Highlands player in the back with a nudge and outjump everyone. Englemon went over the back alot as well. Not that those two have to as they are both outstanding athletes. I think they just tend to rely on their leaping abilities and dont utilize very good skills in boxing out for rebounds.

Disagree, NCC plays some of the nastiest man - man defense I have seen this year. They get all up in your grill and play excellent help defense. I think Holmes is in for a big shocker and will get their first loss.

I am glad that you brought that up. Yes Ncc plays good Defense. However the struggle with quickness and guys who handle the ball. Why do you Trinity beat them by 20. They stuggled a bit the second time they play Newport and Bardstown gave them some Problems. Homles is just as athletic as Trinity, Bolden is a better point guard, ball handler, and scorer and quicker, than Trinity has although Holmes doesnt have anyone that can score like Hicks from Trinity. If NewCath plays man they better pack it in and forget about Ball pressure, If Holmes is Making shot. Holmes will stay undefeated.

 

I am not taking anything from Newcat because they do have the peices and capabilty to beat Holmes, and maybe the only school in this area that has consistently played with Holmes other than Cov Cath and can beat Holmes.

 

My Hunch Holmes by 9 unless Newcath is up by 4 or more late in the game then NewCath with stall them out and hit there free throws. Either way its gonna be a good game and I can careless who win. Wish both teams best of luck and health the rest of the season.

Which is why I said Holmes will bring Schulte and McDonald out high and use ball screens/pick and rolls to use their quickness with Englemon and Chames.

 

Englemon is tough to stop once he gets going to the rim. Just ask anyone who has tried to step in front to draw a charge.

 

I'llhold off on predicting a winner because I really like both teams and their personnel.
