Exactly, when they have to, it's definitely not preferred especially against Holmes guards. Take a look at the CCH game and the result. Pangallo cramps up, Bueter apparently has the flu and doesn't do anything on the offensive end, 4 points maybe? You can consider Siebert somewhat of a guard for NCC, goes down with a sprained ankle. NCC made critical turn overs down the stretch and neither Dupont or Devoto was a factor in the game. If I remember correctly, they had a couple turnovers late in the 4th quarter. McDonald and Schulte carried the Breds in that game. NCC will have to get production out of their 3 guards Pangallo, Bueter, and Siebert in order to win this game. I don't look for Devoto or Dupont to be much of a factor in a game like this. Spot minutes and hopefully take care of the ball, maybe hit a shot or two. If the Breds are relying on them for anything more than that, they are in trouble.

If it gets into a game of one-on-one battles...that isn't NewCath's game. Holmes would have that advantage.

Some on here speak of this Holmes team as if they are invincible. NCC doesn't have the athletes, Holmes will make runs that NCC can't counter, NCC may be able to keep it close , blah, blah , blah

 

This is the same Holmes team that escaped with a 1 point win over Scott, outlasted HC by 3 and beat Cooper by a whopping 6. NCC is better than any of those 3 schools.

Holmes will win going away.NCC does not have the athletics to play with the Bulldogs.I have seen them play 3 times this year and they keep getting better everytime I see them.No one in the 9th region can stay with them holmes 68-54

I agree with the high ball screens. Regardless who guards Bolden, they aren't going to consistently keep him in front of him. If Holmes spreads the floor out correctly and penetrates and kicks I belive NCC will have a tough time guarding them man to man.

 

As clyde mentioned, Cooper did a great job of forcing him down the side of the lane. That allowed them to get some help from the wing. The wing was able to help and still stay on his man (somewhat) because of pushing him away from the middle., NCC must force Bolden to the side of the lane rather than letting him attack the middle of the floor/paint area. If Bolden can consisntely get into the paint, it's going to be tough for the Breds to stop his scoring and passing ability and a very good chance it will lead to NCC big's in foul trouble.

 

You have to realize Bolden is going to get his but you can't let him beat you with his passing ability which makes every person on Holmes team that much better. NCC must force tough angles while attacking the basket.

 

I believe the key for the bulldogs is to really force the tempo of the game. NCC isn't very deep and doesn't have much guard play after Pangallo and Bueter. I would like to see Holmes press and keep constant pressure on the NCC guards making it tought for them to enter the ball to the post.

 

The key for NCC is to utilize their bigs and establish a successful inside threat allowing them to get wide open kick outs for threes because Holmes is committing so may defenders to stop the post play. Although I do think the quickness of Holmes guards can have a serious effect on double downs if NCC isn't hitting from 3.

 

Ultimately, if the score gets into the 60's or above I like Holmes, but if it's in the 40's or low 50's I like NCC.

 

I don't agree with you very often but this is pretty much spot on with how I feel about this game as well and what I have told people in the past when discussing the two teams and this match up.

 

When it comes to Bolden, it is every teams' game plan to force him to the sidelines where you can get help from the wings. Dixie tried to use the same gameplan but didn't get consistent help which allowed him to get good penetration. Liam Rabe did a good job executing what Coach Chevy wanted him to do.

 

Will be interesting to see how Glover and Housely do in this one in reserve roles. Glover has been quiet lately with Housely stepping up, but Glover played well in big games earlier in the season.

Agreed. I think that everyone agrees with that. I was just saying, if you take away every team's top 2 ballhandlers during the fourth quarter of a big game, every team would struggle. Dupont and DeVoto don't have to do anything other than what they've been doing, make it hard for team's to get into their offensive sets and play great on the ball D. Dupont is more than capable of hitting a couple big 3s. I don't know what kind of depth Holmes has, but NewCath has depth. Their bench won't score a ton, but that isn't how they provide "depth." They play D and rebound (Weyer) and have two seniors who guard out on the perimeter.

If we are going to play that game.... Newcath only beat Cooper by "a whopping" 2 with them missing half of their starting lineup, only beat Dixie by 2, and lost to Covcath at home.

 

Honestly, none of that matters when it comes to this game. It is about match ups and how you play THAT NIGHT. A win is a win all day whether it is by 1 or 50.

This was the 1st game that they were pressed into service with more responsibility. From that point on (during Seibert's absence) they have done a very admirable job.

I don't think this is in dispute, but they both can provide valuable, quality minutes when need be.

How about this..........the game will come down to whichever team makes the proper adjustment to the others strength. Now let's just sit back and enjoy the ride.

 

The real beauty of this game is it doesn't matter who wins. This isn't the one that counts. Now for Holmes I think it means more because any team would love to go through the regular season undefeated, as that is quite an accomplishment. Can't recall the last time that has happened in NKY, but I'm sure it has been a while.

Looking at the box scores from the NCC Bardstown game, it did not look like NCC went very deep or utilized DuPont or Devoto very much. You would think playing 4 games in 4 days they would have gotten more time? Not sure if it was match up issues or why playing time was less than other games. Just pointing it out because someone mentioned Bardstown being similar in style to Holmes.

I have no doubt Brannen can make adjustments on the fly and the Breds can make the foul shots if it comes down to that at the end of the game.

If Holmes is hot from outside, they win. If not Breds win with discipline and solid play by their bigs along with great D. Should be a great game.

By the way, neither team is going to save anything for a later game. Holmes wants to go undefeated and NCC wants the confidence heading into tourney time.
