Best time to go to Eli's is when the weather is crap. We went two Saturday's ago at 5:30 on a Saturday. Walked right in the door, ordered, and had our food in 10 minutes. If you try that on a nice saturday in September, 45 mins to order another 30 mins to get your food. I love to go when it is cold and rainy.

 

Been there several times...agree you have to catch in on the right (or wrong) day.

Went to Mardi Gras on Madison today. I've been wanting to hit their food truck for a while but it's always too far North. Ordered two shrimp poboys with spicy honey glaze. Well worth the $8, their wings looked great as well.

My son went to the new BBQ place in OTR called Pontiac's. Owned by the people that own Senate.

 

He said it was really good.

I took a walk down 18 last weekend and the Battaglia Deli is no longer open. Looked like the gun shop is expanding into their space. I really hate to see a mom and pop place close it's doors.

Drove past Jim Dandys in Evendale Saturday. Already had eaten. Might plan another trip up there to check it out.

Hit Big Bone BBQ in Union the other night. Solid. Brisket was good, sauces were good, and the collard greens and baked beans were solid. Not awesome, but good. We'll be back.

This reminds me of a Chinese joint on Race near 9th downtown Cincy. It's called Yum Yum, and it's been there for years. I've never seen anyone ever going in the front door, and the blinds in the front window look like they haven't been cleaned in 40 years.

 

I looked it up online and people rave about it and say it's the best Chinese they have ever had. They say it's run by an old married Chinese couple that keeps the door locked until someone rings the bell.

 

I was telling a friend of mine while passing what I've read, so he rings the doorbell and sure enough an old Chinese man opens the door. My friend just explained that he was curious about the place and if there was actually a restaurant there or if the sign was just there from years ago. The man pleasantly assured him that they indeed did run a restaurant there.

 

I've never been but am now curious. I'm envisioning an interior that hasn't changed in forever, which could be interesting as long as it's clean.

 

Who knows... the critics may be accurate, and it's actually to die for Chinese, and a long time best kept secret.
