Is Leon Hart out at Ashland?

Featured Replies

Chuck Smith...

What was his record at the following

Campbellsville

AC Scottsville

Smith was the head coach at Allen County-Scottsville for one season, 1987. His team went 6-5 in Class AA, but failed to make the playoffs. Glasgow and Taylor County represented that district.

Smith was the head coach at Campbellsville from 1988-91, compiling a 16-20 record. The only year they made the playoffs was 1991, where they were defeated in the opening round by Garrard County.

Thanks, a 22-25 record and 0-1 in playoffs. Good players make a good coach. He is a good coach but when given good players it helps. Could Beatty be a state champ at McCreary Central or does he have to have great players to be a winner.

I think you have to keep in mind that Smith was growing as a coach at this time. While your statement of "good players make a good coach" is true, if you look at many (dare I say most) coaches during their early years it will showcase some struggles. His Campbellsville teams gradually improved each season and when Perry Thomas came in their success skyrocketed. Boyle County was a sleeping program that had had success in the late 70s/early 80s but had fallen on hard times. Smith's first team was 7-3 against a very weak schedule, the next year they were 2-8, and then the wins shot straight up from there. Part of that was good players, but I'd say another part of it was him rounding into shape and figuring out the best coaching style/system/technique that worked for him.

Those players weren't great before Smith arrived. Talent is nice, but good coaching can make it great.

Ashland has only be mediocre under Leon Hart when you stack them up against Highlands and Cov Cath. If the Ashland teams of their hayday would have had to play these current Highlands teams they would also look somewhat mediocre.

No offense to Chuck Smith, but the teams at Boyle he coached had some real good players, including an NFL player, a Mr. football, and many more DI players, who couldn't win with that. What did he do at Campbellsville or AC Scottsville, what was his record at Campbellsville?

This isn't a Chuck Smith thread so I'll be brief. Take a look at Boyle County before Chuck Smith and after Chuck Smith and you'll find he developed the Boyle County program his way and with his vision to make a successful program. Boyle did have some fine athletes but he taught those athletes to play the game of football and taught them to believe and achieve in themselves when no one else believed in them. He changed the entire culture of the program and Boyle County would not have the reputation they have now if not for Chuck Smith. His legacy speaks for itself and I'm sure if he had stayed at Campbellsville or Allen County Scottsville as long as he was at Boyle County they would have similar reputations as well. It took him almost a decade to turn the Boyle program around and he did it when everyone said he couldn't.

Okay. I'm done. Sorry to thread jack. Had to respond.

In a day and age where many coaches build their team up in public and talk about how good they are, it was refreshing to talk to Coach Hart. He was always the most critical of his team, openly telling people what his team's weaknesses were. And, he was always truthful about his assessments. No propaganda from Coach Hart, no ulterior motives, no sugar coating, just the facts. The benefits of his stint at Ashland will be seen for years to come, as he has more then likely, trained the coach that will follow him.

The only times I questioned his comments were after games, he took all the blame for all the loses, and always gave all the credit to everyone else after a win. Of course, that what the good coaches do.

Dear Coach Hart,

I guess if three more years are out of the question, I pray that your parents health improves, that your grandchildren want to learn all they can about their grandfather, that your clucks, purrs, and yelps are the sweetest sounds in the woods, and that every answer comes from a longbeard. Thank you for everything you have done for my children.

I disagree Guru. Ashland has been very good.

I agree Chuck Smith would be a great choice. But, as others have said, Coach Love has done a great job running the defense. Coach Love has earned the opportunity. If he says no, Chuck Smith would be a no-brainer.

I am not being critical of anyone on this thread, but I don't like it in our culture that we are ready to move on to the next guy so fast without acknowledging what the guy on the way out has done. I realize that is the world we live in today but I don't like it. I guess just another sign of me getting old.

I do want to say to my good friend and also outstanding football coach, Leon Hart, congratulations on a tremendous run of success as a football coach. I met Leon when he was the OC at EKU back in the spring of 1999. Super football coach and someone that helped to make me and our program better.

The Ashland kids have been very blessed to have Coach Hart.

Our battles in 2003 were great football games. Our preseason scrimmages have pushed us and helped to make us much better. The Tomcats were a reality check that we needed. They exposed our weaknesses and helped make us much better down the road.

One of the best parts of coaching for me has been looking forward to seeing Leon each preseason and our friendship. I will really miss that part of the football season.

God Bless Coach Hart and his family. And, THANK YOU coach for all you have done for football in this state and most of all for kids.

David Buchanan

Thank you coach for posting your comments ...you spoke what most coaches in high school football were thinking.
I have no idea but as an outsider looking in Ashland has been mediocre for a long time. If the Tomcats really want to go back to the glory days they need to consider going after someone like Chuck Smith.

You are confusing "being in the way of Highlands/CovCath" with being "mediocre".

I think I understand what theguru is trying to say. Ashland has had some very good teams under Coach Hart, but we've seen what happens after the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs. He's saying if Ashland wants to take that next step they should go after somebody like Chuck Smith. Somebody who has proven that he can take a program to that championship level, year in, and year out. I have to admit, I don't know a lot about Coach Love. I do know the kids love him, and that Coach Love has done an outstanding job coaching the defense under Coach Hart. Ashland has had some of their best defensive teams in a long time under Coach Love. Everybody I've ever talked to speaks very highly of Coach Love. Can he take Ashland to that next level? If he gets the job, only time will tell. I wish the best of luck to whomever gets the job.

Does anyone have the playoff win-loss totals in coach Harts tenure?

Does anyone have the playoff win-loss totals in coach Harts tenure?

78-40 in the regular season, including 2 Region Finals appearances during his tenure (his first two years in 03-04).

Playoff record of 9-9 (Highlands and Cov. Cath had a lot to do with those playoff exits the last 6 years).

What people will make of his success, is to each their own, but one thing you can't argue is how great of a man he is. THAT is his legacy.
