Yes, I was told he informed the team today he is retiring.

WOW.. Who replaces him? Would Coach Haywood even think about leaving Belfry for Ashland? Jim Matney at Johnson Central?

I have no idea but as an outsider looking in Ashland has been mediocre for a long time. If the Tomcats really want to go back to the glory days they need to consider going after someone like Chuck Smith.

A good leader grooms his heir. I believe that the answer will come from within. Under coach Hart they were able to split the last four with Ironton And be competitive against Belfry and JC every year while they have not been a legitatw contender for their class they are better than mediocre

I'm like you guru, I don't know much about Ashland.

Do we have a list of possible candidates or was this just today that he said he was retiring?

Hart announced his retirement today, so it's official.

I will say current Assistant Coach and Defensive Coordinator Tony Love will be his replacement.

I can't fathom that they'd hire anyone else but Tony and he is a very deserving candidate. Great coach.

IF the Tomcats want to get back to their glory days they need Ashland Oil to move back into town, Armco to start churning out steel again and get their enrollment up to their hayday. Otherwise, they'll be similar to what we've seen the past few seasons. Very respectable especially in this area, but no threat to NKY teams once the playoffs start.

I disagree Guru. Ashland has been very good.

I agree Chuck Smith would be a great choice. But, as others have said, Coach Love has done a great job running the defense. Coach Love has earned the opportunity. If he says no, Chuck Smith would be a no-brainer.

I am not being critical of anyone on this thread, but I don't like it in our culture that we are ready to move on to the next guy so fast without acknowledging what the guy on the way out has done. I realize that is the world we live in today but I don't like it. I guess just another sign of me getting old.

I do want to say to my good friend and also outstanding football coach, Leon Hart, congratulations on a tremendous run of success as a football coach. I met Leon when he was the OC at EKU back in the spring of 1999. Super football coach and someone that helped to make me and our program better.

The Ashland kids have been very blessed to have Coach Hart.

Our battles in 2003 were great football games. Our preseason scrimmages have pushed us and helped to make us much better. The Tomcats were a reality check that we needed. They exposed our weaknesses and helped make us much better down the road.

One of the best parts of coaching for me has been looking forward to seeing Leon each preseason and our friendship. I will really miss that part of the football season.

God Bless Coach Hart and his family. And, THANK YOU coach for all you have done for football in this state and most of all for kids.

No offense to Chuck Smith, but the teams at Boyle he coached had some real good players, including an NFL player, a Mr. football, and many more DI players, who couldn't win with that. What did he do at Campbellsville or AC Scottsville, what was his record at Campbellsville?

I don't know the records. I also know Boyle football was really down when he took over. Chuck Smith is an outstanding football coach AND he would be the first to agree with you that he had some great players.

He completely turned Campbellsville around, along with Perry Thomas, before leaving for Boyle. He changed a culture and built a great program (at the time) from nothing.

I agree he is a good coach but what could he do at a school like Jackson Co or McCreary Central that has few athletes playing football. He succeeded at Boyle because of great athletes and Campbellsville had some great athletes in a class A alignment.

What was his record at the following

Campbellsville

AC Scottsville
