Why are there 23 players on the second offensive team?

I am extremely suprised that Richie Whitford (HHS) 6'3 295lbs didn't get at least honorable mention offensive line. He was the most dominate lineman I saw all year. He had more pancakes than anyone I can remember..He was nasty!!!

 

He did not get nominated locally so he wasn't on the ballot for the state-wide vote.

Travis Wright... an oversite the past 2 years considering the level of competition and what he was able to do on the field. I can't imagine his numbers if he had been able to play against scarecrow defenses.

 

I would like to see his numbers if he didn't have the talent around him.

We all agree it's a flawed process.

 

We should also agree that in no way can a writer who votes know much of anything of players they do not see.

 

So, we should remember this and not put a lot of thought and emotion into this.

Strictly from this year (ie it's not a career award) I'd take McCoy, Barker, Bir, and Woodside without question and that's without even knowing the other QBs in the state. Bolin is better but I'm not sure how many games he ended up playing this year.

 

The Sherry kid from South Oldham would be on the list.

Big congrats to ALL the All State players. Especially to Highlands , McCoy, Dee and Hope. Also to Coach Turner at Highlands for the awesome Oline he continues to develop year in and year out.

Big congrats to the 3 Bluebirds well deserved.

 

Richie Whitford omission is a travesty imo.

 

He served more pancakes this year than IHOP on a Sunday morning.

 

It's a shame Nussbaum didn't get to show the rest of the state his talent in a state championship game cuz he is one of the best players in the state hands down.

I agree with what DoubleDeuce said earler.. Fogle only recieves HM recognition??? How does a kid who's selected to both the Best of the Bluegrass, and the Border Bowl rosters, 1st team Offense and 1st team defense on both all district and region teams, 4A/5A P.O.Y, and 5A district 5 P.O.Y. only make HM on the All State Team.. He missed two games due to injury and still was towards the top of all stat categories.. Makes absolutely no sense..

 

Barker only recieving HM recognition, is mind blowing as well..

Congrats to all selected. I'll leave the criticism of the methodology to the others who have already posted (with some very fair criticism).

 

Special kudos to the Highlands players. Well done boys. Special props to my nephew, Mitch Dee. I remember a few years back when he told me that Coach Turner thought he could best help the team (the JV team at the time) if he switched from guard to center. He really wanted to continue playing guard as his two cousins before him had played, but he made the switch. Kid worked his tail off learning how to do shotgun snaps. Not very big; not the strongest; not the quickest. But a smart kid that worked really, really hard. If my recollection is correct, he didn't sail one snap over the QB in the two years he started. Granted, last year he had a 6'5' QB whom he made jump once or twice and this year, he made Donovan work on his vertical jump skills during the second CovCath game, but to not sail one in two years with 99.99% of the snaps being in the gun is impressive. And he was a very, very solid blocker on top of it. Congrats Mitch. Your family is extremely proud of you, and you just know that your Grandpa is up there having a 7 count and bragging on you. Has Henry mentioned, Coach Turner's coaching skills once again showed themselves. If he isn't one of the top 2 O line coaches in the state, I'd be shocked.

I've gone round and round with The AP on this for years and have given up on it. As Richard said, the fact that voters in major population areas like Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky (or anywhere for that matter) can only nominate 15 players is absolutely ridiculous. Can you really tell me there are only 15 players from the Louisville area - ON A YEARLY BASIS - that merit no more than honorable-mention status? Once you get past Trinity and St. X, that leaves about 6 players to nominate. It's an absolutely ridiculous process.

 

Congratulations to all the outstanding athletes recognized by the Kentucky AP!

 

I understand your frustration; it's important that the Kentucky AP keep working to improve the nomination and selection process. Regarding a recent example of our Coaches handling the voting and "getting it right", let me point out that AP Kentucky 2012 First Team Dalyn Dawkins Trinity/RB was not even voted onto the 2012 6A District Four Football First Team...WOW! My heart went out for the kid when I read that on the Courier Journal.com...

The Courier Journal All-State Team will no doubt have it's flaws when released next week, but let's again congratulate those outstanding athletes recognized.

Congrats to all that made team. I agree with you but when you have 15 media members voting this will happen. Same thing happened to Tyson Williams at Somerset.
