Petrino has done nothing but win in college football. This is a phenominal hire for Western. If he wouldn't have lied after the accident, he would still be at Arkansas. Come on people. He is coaching men, not high school kids. The affair is between him and his wife. It has nothing to do with coaching. Western just hired a winner.

I am fine with the hire. It was the classic, "I can't get any job better, and you are not going to get a coach as good as me" type deal. Each of Petrino's last two departures have been awful.There is no disputing that. Leaving UL was to be expected unless you were drinking (and a lot were) the kool-aid. I blame Jurich and UL for how things were handled post-Petrino with the hiring of Kragthorpe and not having a pulse of the kind of players Petrino had on his roster.

Totally on them for making the hire. It'd be like Nick Saban going to the NFL and 'Bama hiring somebody cut from a different tooth that couldn't handle the guys he had brought in. Louisville was stacked with Kragthorpe. He was one of these guys, like many head coaches, both high school and coaches, that no matter how much success the program might have had before he gets there.....you can bet that the new coach is the type of, "Everything they did was wrong. Everything I do is better." I'm all for change when change happens, but sometimes, if it's not broke; don't fix it. Massive, self rightous ego's don't allow this, though.

 

Kind of off topic here, but it's like talking to a lot of new head coaches across the state (1st year head coaches and/or a new gig for an established head coach), whether the program they are taking over went 0-10 or 10-0, there are two things that are "awful" if you ask the new head coach:

 

1) Discipline

2) Off-Season

 

I've met very few that have said, "You know.....there are a lot of good things that the previous coach had implemented....etc, etc."

^ a massive error that Jurich made with Kragthorpe, was forcing him to keep a lot of the staff from the previous regime.....there was a lot of undermining, etc...

I feel that it is a tremendous hire for them....think about this....he's getting $850,000 this year....if he leaves after one season, there is a $1,250,000 buyout....that would be a win....the publicity they have already received is priceless. They also, have a senior laden team returning, and IMO, the very best offensive mind in the college ranks. In regards to Bobby's character? Who really knows what is going on in his day to day life.....but I would be absolutely shocked if he were to do something embarrassing to himself, his family, or the university.....that would be the death penalty for him. I fully expect for him to be gone in 2-3 years...if that happens, he'll have had tremendous success.....sounds good to me.

 

Whole heartedly agree! Good hire for WKU, but I think it's absurd for anyone to taunt UK for going with Stoops instead of Petrino. (Or any other BCS conf school for not hiring Petrino).

I think any BCS school that didn't hire Petrino "may" have made a grave mistake.....the results will tell the story.

Very possible and hindsight is 20/20. It's way too soon since his incident to pay him millions of dollars. WKU got a great deal. Any school that he'd have stayed at long term had safer and/or better options. UK couldn't afford for this hire not to be a hit.

Taggart announced Thursday that he had hired Raymond Woodie as a defensive assistant, and would be retaining current USF running backs coach Rick Scott. I don't think Woodie following Coach T was a shock to anyone. During the dead period, I assume more changes will take place.

 

Who follows Holtz will be a determining factor, too.

Great move for Western. Let's face it ... this is the only circumstance in which the Hilltoppers would be able to hire a football coach of Petrino's caliber.

 

I wish Kentucky would've hired Petrino ... he was, by far, the best coach available.

^Why should UK have hired him? UK is looking for long term success. Petrino may have shown improvement while he was there, but he'd have left them high and dry when he left for a bigger job, and UK would've been like every where else when he left, which is a mess. Both schools (WKU & UK) did what was right for them.

Coach T added Walt Wells and Nick Sheridan to his offensive football staff, today. They will join USF after the bowl game.
