Whats the contract looking like? For how much and how long?

Why is it as a society that we feel role models must be people who come off and pretend to be perfect? I don't get it. I dont know about you all, but I have learned to become a better man, husband and father by the mistakes that those I've looked up to and myself, just as much (if not more) than the few things in this world I've actually done right.

 

I think that Bobby Petrino could become a great leader of young men in many ways, but especially from the aspect of saying, "Fellas, if you ever learn anything from me, don't make the mistake(s) I've made. If him saying that this offseason to his new team, and it effects one of his players 20 years down the road who might be going through some marital problems, is that not having a positive effect.

 

I don't know about some of you, but I actually try to surround myself with those who have some sort of imperfection. They are the real people out there. It's the ones who claim and try to be perfect that scare the crap out of me. Those are the ones who weird me out.

 

I had dear family member who was a recovering alcholic for almost 30 years. Many times, I went with him just to listen (especially when I was younger) to some of the men in there whose lives had hit rock bottom in their days when they couldn't control the bottle. Being the adult that I am, I admittedly have a drink from time to time (like many of us on here), but do you know who has forever made a lasting impression on me? Those older men at AA meetings. Not the holier than thou types.

 

If Bobby Petrino is the man that I think he is now (one that realizes he has taken a dump in his nest one too many times, and is trying to right all of his wrongs), then I would love for my son to play for him. I really think he is a man, who, like many of us (and, many succss stories out there) who have hit rock bottom by wrong choices that we've made in our professional careers, as husbands, etc. and have realized that they better get the ship sailing in the right direction or else. I think he is doing that.

 

I just hate it that we live in a society where one bad decision ruins a person. I dont undertand it. One wrong doing doesnt make a person, just like one great deed doesn't either.

Four years @ 850K each year. Which, goes to show how much the program at WKU is growing. Willie was hired 4 years ago, for I believe 286K a year before his extension last year.

 

 

Some perks of the contract include:

$10, 000 for season tickets sales of 12K per year

$300,000 for reaching a BCS Bowl (If Kent State can do it, WKU can, especially with him at the helm)

$25, 000 for being named National COY

$10, 000 per semester for team's GPA of 3.0 or higher

 

What I laugh at is all of the people who say, "Uh, yeah, well he won't stay long." And? How is that any different from Willie leaving? WKU is a mid major, which means they are usually stepping stone jobs. I for one think he will stay a few years (possibly..but, if he doesn't, no sleep lost). Obviously nobody wanted to touch him with a 10 foot poll, yet everyone knows he can coach. That aspect of him hasn't changed. Two winning seasons, and even a BCS bid aren't going to change the reasons why others passed on him.

 

I just, I dont know.....I think he is a guy who is trying to make a change. If he happens to stay for any amount of time, WKU could become the next Boise State IMO, and possibly even better. Who knew who Dan Hawkins and later, Chris Peterson were?

 

Ticket sales are going to sky rocket. That place will be packed every game next year. If that happens, and they go to another bowl game, look for a contract extension that would likely put him over $1 million. If the games are sold out next year (two of them were this year), also look for them to add on (the open side, away from the scoreboard could make room for another 10K, easy). Then, look for more money coming his way, as well.

 

I just see this as a win, win situation. Whether he stays or if he leaves in a year or two. I honestly don't know how WKU will be worse off for the hire, unless a scandal like the past repeats itself.

Guy is a phenomenal football mind, but I personally would have an awfully hard time playing for or wanting my son to play for a man I have zero respect for. Respect isn't automatically there, it's something that has to be earned and Bobby Petrino the person hasn't earned a bit of it IMO.

When Joker Phillips was fired a few weeks ago, I don’t recall one person on this board crying out that he didn’t deserve to be fired because he was someone with good morals.

I agree morals are important. But folks we put winning more important that we do morals. We don’t buy season tickets to watch the Monks vs. The Nuns. We want to see a victory.

We like to shift things to fit the school we cheer for. I think Both UL and UK fans have done that with Rick and Cal.

Left a grease fire in Atlanta midseason after their franchise player was sent to prison, and had an affair, now correcting it.

He doesn't owe you, me or anybody else a thing. If he has been accepted back by his wife and children, along with getting right with his God, then that's all that matters. If that happens, everything else takes care of itself

 

He had an affair and got caught. I can promise you that there are many great leaders (coaches, teachers, professors, politicians, those in the military, etc.) of men/women out there who are having affairs, they just haven't gotten caught yet. They are still riding the wave of excitement, living on the edge.

 

Has he lost some respect? Sure. Does he have to work on getting that back? You dang right. As I've said a few times already, I think he has realized what a complete idiot he had been, and is now righting those wrongs. I haven't been perfect in a day of my life, I dang sure am not going to judge or expect somebody to be something that I haven't, nor will ever be.

 

Obviously, there are certain things where you draw the line of forgiveness, but resigning from a job ONCE before it was complete and having an extra marital affair aren't things that make me dispise a person (again, if they don't learn and better themselves from those poor decisions, then I'll be in yours and others boats).

What gives me the biggest head spin, is I know some out there, both women and men who love JFK and Clinton like they were their own relatives, yet are disgusted with the Petrino hire at WKU? WHAT?? No! That doesn't make sense. You can accept the presidents (one who was one of the greats of our nation) of our country getting more tail than a toilet seat on the side of their marriage, but not a head football coach at a university? What kind of sense does that make?

What a great post. Lets go back a bit further. When Bill Curry was fired it was generally accepted that he was a highly moral person but as I recall not only did the BBN applaud his firing there were even incidents of "suggestions" at his home.

Your Joker example is just a that, a joke. No one said as long as you have good morals you can coach anywhere. If that were true Bill Curry would still be at UK. I don't really care about the morals. If Bobby's only issue was that he cheated on his wife then I would have been screaming that UK hire him. The problem with Bobby is he has no morals, he's a liar, a scum bag, and he abused his position at Arkansas by giving his girlfriend a job. He disgraced the althletic department and the fact that Arkansas fired him should speak volumes. If winning was it then he would still be there.

You're right at the end of the day winning is what matters, but I would assume as an AD/President of a University you'd like the guy you're hiring to be someone you can trust. He's shown that the last thing he is, is trustworthy. I just think hiring a guy who has scorched everywhere he's ever been is a big risk. I for one don't think he's changed at all. He'll leave Western high and dry the first chance he gets IMO.

How's Arkansas looking? How did UofL do right after Petrino? How about the Falcons when he bolted?

Another thing to think about, say if he leaves after this year, big deal. Chances are if he leaves, it will mean a couple things.

 

1) They won, and likely big. (Sun Belt Champs, Top 25, possible BCS).

2) That will mean more money to the program, which means...

3) Able to go out and pay even more money for an up and coming coach

4) Neal Brown is a head coach waiting to happen

 

.....and, Ill leave it at that. How the Air Raid offense will do at UK, I'm not sure. I for one am not to thrilled about it, bc while the passing yards and points at Texas Tech were high, the rushing yardage was just one spot better than UK (UK was 89th, Tech 88th). We all know that the ability to run the football in the SEC is a must. You can from that offense (see Texas Tech's best year, it was also the highest rushing total that Leach had ever had there), but I just don't see it happening at UK in the SEC. Now, the Sun Belt, different situation there.

Arkansas made the decision to fire him in late Spring. Not many valid options out there in late spring.

 

UofL could have made a better hire after him, they didn't.

 

The falcons went in the gutter for a couple reasons, number 1, not having Vick who the entire team (offensively obviously) was developed around. They had a couple bad years, but back now. Granted they haven't won a playoff game in the years since, but I know a lot of NFL teams out there that would give anything to be 9-7, 10-6, 1st round playoff games.

 

Come to think of it....Atlanta had that one miracle year, but what have they ever really done?
