Petrino was not an option for any SEC school. Officially or unofficially the Presidents got together and said he wasn't an option.

 

New AD at WKU is really stepping out on a limb with this one.

 

I had a conversation today with a WKU alum and we discussed the possibility that Petrino would resign from WKU if Texas Tech called him about their opening. My initial reaction was "no way" but then my guy reminded me of who we are talking about.

He does it better. His offense is adaptable and creative. He understands why plays are successful; rather than just aping what works, he adopts the elements that fit. At Louisville, he ran a power running game with spread principles from multiple sets in order to produce specific reactions from the defense. It was perfect for his personnel both in taking advantage of their strengths and masking their weaknesses.

Reaction from my group of about 10 WKU grads was less than enthusiastic.

Does anyone recall what he did at Arkansas and just how recent it was? The thing with the Falcons was a snake move but that sort of stuff happens. At Arkansas, not only did he have a mistress (that happens too), he used his influence to hire her within the athletic department. When it began to unravel, lies after lies after lies. This is not your ordinary snake coach, this dude is in a league of his own. I want to win as much as the next guy, but would never want this guy at the head of my program. All of this happened like seven months ago too!!! I think it makes sense for a school like Western to take the risk, but calling UK fans jealous and scared of this hire is a complete joke. You can have him, however briefly it may be.

At Arkansas 2008-2011, 34-17 (17-15 in the SEC) 2-1 in bowl appearances. 2011 season was 11-2, loses to Alabama and LSU. Finished that year with a win over Kansas State in the Cotton Bowl and a #5 ranking in the Final AP Poll.

I reread your post and caught the rhetoric in it the second time. Realized my post, though efficiently accurate, was a ridiculous response.

 

I agree, as do the presidents of many schools, that character matters. However, if Petrino is to get a chance at redeeming himself, again, why not WKU? The guy has to watch his p's and q's this time, or he's done for good. At least, for the short term, it keeps the momentum of what Willie Taggart built going.

Pot calling the kettle black? Not too many programs or coaches in big time college athletics are squeaky clean. The guy deserves a second chance, I'm happy WKU is giving him the opportunity to get back into coaching. Yes, I do expect him to be gone in a year or two. But it's like dating a supermodel, I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts! Petrino is a great coach, and having him at WKU will bring national attention. Heck the hire was news on ESPN before he was even announced as HC at WKU. I'm ready for next years football season already, but even more excited for the Little Caesars Bowl. After Willie left I accepted the notion that WKU will be nothing more than a stepping stone for many coaches whether in be in basketball or football. It is what it is. At least with Petrino we know what we are getting, and not expecting him to stick around 5-6 years.

When I was up there after thanksgiving, and UK was still looking for a coach, I was listening to a talk show on a Louisville station as I was driving through. The topic was Bobby P and more than one mother called in to say she'd never let her boy play for him, even at UK.

 

I wonder how he plays in Florida and Texas, now too?

Say what you want, but the WKU brand was live on ESPNU yesterday for nearly 30 minutes and they are talking WKU football today on Mike and Mike and the Dan Patrick Show with Petrino. Who else could have given WKU this kind of nationwide exposure?

Let's be fair, there is a difference between coaches who are not squeaky clean and what Bobby Petrino is. You could argue that Arkansas was a second chance after the way he screwed the Falcons mid-season. Just flat out quit on them and left a note in the players lockers about it.

 

Like I said, I do think it is worth the risk for WKU. UK has been brought up several times in the thread and I wanted to give my perspective as a Cat fan.
