Against a very inferior Bracken he was 11-13 197 yards then against a inferior Paris he was 6-8 163 and finally he was 6-12 for 153 against a good Frankfort club. I guess our meaning of balanced is very different but 50% completion rate and only 6 completions tells me it is going to be run central and that is not my idea of balanced by a long way. The Mayfield run defense is alot better than Frankfort's. Turnovers and penalities can change a game but not taking that into consideration I see Mayfield as having the edge.

 

TP, you are almost always on target with your assessments so I am not going to doubt you. If Mayfield's run defense is a lot better than Frankfort's, then Nussbaumm will have less than 50 yards rushing and it will be a tough night for the Tigers. If you can shut down the run like that, then Fieger might throw it 20 times. The nice thing for this Tiger team is they can do that and be effective if they need to. A 50% completion rate against a tough opponent is pretty good in high school.

All I am trying to say is that I was almost certain that Bw would have success with the run against Frankfort after watching several films on both teams and this one went about the way I expected but it is hard to get a real feel often by just watching film and comparing without common opponets. Certainly no one knows for sure how the young qb will do, he may be in over his head or he may have a huge game and certainly Mf's secondary has been their weakest area on defense. I am watching the Bw Frank game now so maybe I will have more useless observations later.

The Tigers will throw the ball as little, or as much, as necessary. If that means 5 passes, great. If it means 15 passes, then that is what they will do. But Beechwood is not coming out in shotgun spread and slinging it 20+ times. With Fieger at QB in 3 games, this is already one of the best passing offenses I have seen at Beechwood and that is what I and many others have been saying Beechwood needs to beat Mayfield. I will also say the play calling by Hergott has been the best I have seen from him in his time as offensive coordinator. He is doing an awesome job.

 

The play calling since Fieger took over at QB has been good, however before then, the play calling wasn't very good, IMO. One particular series against NewCath comes to mind. 4 straight hand offs inside the 5 yard line and Bwood fails to score?

 

With that being said, the passing play calls against Frankfort were great! Tigers receivers were wide open on the TD passes. (Nuss and Lightner) But the one thing I don't understand in Bwood's passing game is consistently using wrs. They will throw to a particular receiver one game and have success and then that particular player/receiver won't see another pass for a few games and then all of a sudden they will again in another game. I believe Bwood has some solid receivers however I don't think they have utilized some theirbetter receivers enough. To develop some confidence in the passing game it would be nice to see the Tigers build some consistency with receivers. I was surprised Frankfort wasn't picking up on who to guard on these pass plays. If your playing the Tigers and they throw, key in on the TE or Nuss/RB because about 90% of the time its the RB leaking out or tight end across middle. I have yet to see a quick screen pass all year or even 5-10 yd slants.

 

Also, I understand using under classman on kick-off defense to get them playing time however, I don't understand this move by Rash. Majority of teams at least get to the 40 almost 50 every time on kick off returns unless Sletto gets it to the end zone. Don't like this move because it's much tougher for a team to drive 80 yards to score rather than 50 to 60 yards.

This will be a blow out. MF by a bunch. Mayfield should rest up this week. BW will play physical so rest your top players a lot. That is what cost you vs Hazard last year. They don't need to play much anyway.

I think Beechwood's chances are better than some are thinking. I've doubted them a lot and figured they would not do as much as they have. Things have changed a lot for the Tigers since the earlier part of the season and even if the quarterback is a freshman, he has done enough over the past few weeks to convince me that he's enough of a difference maker for the offense. Regardless of who wins, I think it's close; good luck to both teams.
