Say what you really mean. You are upset that the frosh(5) have been moved up and are doing really well. What were the returns like when they weren't there? If it wasn't for the frosh against Paris, there would have been 2 returns for a touchdown. Why can't everyone just be happy for the success that the Beechwood Tigers are having no matter if they are underclassmen or not? I'm sorry that you are upset that little Johnny got replaced or no one is throwing him the ball. Please get use to it its going to happen again this week. The players that step it up in practice and games will play.

I will be surprised if freshmen who has only played since the playoffs started can lead his team to a victory over Mayfield. I say Nussbaum will tell the tale for BW, If he has a big night they are probably right in the game, if they have to rely on a freshmen qb then their odds go down. Jackson will be a load and if he gets off to a fast start then Mayfield's odds go up. Guhy has developed into a very nice qb this season and if we get the running and passing going, it could be a very long night for BW. I look forward to the matchups of these to storied programs, both have had much success over the years and they usually come in bunches for both teams.

If Jackson catches him just right I hope he can remember his name by saturday.

That and Bw abilty to stop Mayfield's offense will tell us alot early. The Tigers will benefit from the Cards being short handed up front this week as one of our starting linemen is out. Bw claims they now can throw it around and they may can but the new qb only attempted 12 passes completing 6 against Frankfort and should have been picked atleast once so I don't think Rash is going to throw much granted in the 3 starts they could run effectively and didn't need to throw much (the first 2 starts were against much weaker teams so hard to gauge much from those games). Even when they do throw they still like to get it to a back that they slide out of the backfield and it is often Nuss. Frankfort failed to apply pressure often on the youngster, if Mf can do that I hope it will lead to frosh mistakes. So if we stop Nuss I think we likely win but if he wears his superman cape he could take them to the promise land. Thankfully we have the states best linebacker who has a superman cape of his own. I look for the frosh to share snaps at qb with Nuss, it was effective last year granted we were in a prevent much of that lone drive but it was effective much of this year before the frosh arrived. One thing for sure, Rash and the Tigers should put fourth a super effort as they have dreamed or had nightmares about the Cards for 365 days or I guess it would be for 1,095 days

If they lose, it won't be because the frosh QB wasn't moved up earlier. He has taken more snaps and has more experience this season than any other QB Beechwood has. The freshman teams he played against were very good teams - Highlands, Cov Cath, Ryle, Cooper, Dixie - playing those teams is about as good as playing a bad 1A school. The one game I would have liked to see him in was the New Cath game but that was the same week as the freshman championship game so he didn't get any practice time with varsity. Frankfort was a tough opponent and he showed the poise and decision making he needs to win this game. He hasn't lost a game this season. His only loss in his career at Beechwood was to Cincinnati Moeller as an 8th grade QB on the freshman team last year. He comes into this game with a world of confidence and that is probably the best thing for a freshman QB.

I don't expect a lopsided win, period.. For some reason, Mfds offense has been sputtering lately.. They aren't that finely oiled machine we saw earlier in the year.. They still have a balanced offense and several receivers that can hurt you, but, recently, they've had to rely more heavily on Jackson to carry the load and KCD did a very good job of containing him last week and I expect Bwood to have a better D than KCD had.. I think BWood will make a couple of big plays on us and score 2-3 times, but, I don't think they can just line up and beat us on every series, as we'll win our fair share.. If Mayfield does struggle, I still expect them to be able to put 2-3 drives together and then also make a big play somewhere.. Morris and staff have been excellent making halftime adjustments and controlling games in the 2nd half and I think they'll do the same here.. I expect BWood to score a couple of 1st half TDs and Mayfield to answer with 2 of there own, making it 14-14 at half.. I think Mayfield comes out and controls the 3rd qtr and scores 2 times to 0 or BWood, going up 28-14 at the end of 3.. I expect Mayfield to tack on a 3rd 2nd half score in the early 4th, taking a 35-14 lead.. At that point, BWood gets into a hurry up and has to go the air more than they wanted, but, it pays off as they answer the Cards score with a quick strike of there own cutting the lead to 35-21.. There defense steps up on there next series and forces a long fg attempt that sails wide, however, the Cardinal drive did eat 4-5 minutes off the clock.. BWood strikes again with under 2:00 to go to cut the lead to 35-28, but, an onside kick fails and the Cards are able to pick up 1 1st down and then run the clock out.. Final 35-28 Cards..

Sportguy, I do expect Mayfield to win but I don't think it will be a huge margin, I feel 2 or 3 td win but we have started slow lately and if wedo it again Bw may very well win. Either way this is the game we all wanted to see.

It will the fourth straight year that Mayfield and Beechwood have meet in the regional title and the boys from Fort Mitchell will be looking for a different result. Mayfield has owned the Tigers’ winning all three of those tilts.

 

An over-confident Cardinals’ squad may be in for a long night against a Beechwood team that is thriving right now in the role of underdog. A long bus ride and a hostile environment might be of a factor to keep the Tigers in this affair until the bitter end.

 

MAYFIELD CARDINALS (12-1) AT BEECHWOOD TIGERS (9-4)

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Every November a select few number of players elevate their games and lead their teammates with their will not to lose. Max Nussbaum is in that category right now for Beechwood. In the last two weeks he has scored nine of his 24 touchdowns on the year. The poise of freshman quarterback Kyle Fieger has exceeded everyone’s expectations. As long as he stays within himself and not try to do too much against Mayfield he will leave his team in excellent shape to win.

 

The Mayfield offense all starts with running back Jonathon Jackson. The senior has been a workhorse with over 1,700 yards and 29 touchdowns on the ground. This is the third straight season that Jackson has run for at least 1,100 yards. He had 197 yards in last year’s matchup against the Tigers. Quarterback Jake Guhy has not missed a beat following in his brother’s footsteps under center. The junior has thrown for more than 2,400 yards with 30 touchdowns. Guhy has thrown 52 touchdown passes in his career. Jordon Brown has over 1,000 yards receiving and 10 touchdowns receptions for the Cardinals.

 

TEAM TRENDS: These two programs have combined 21 state titles (Mayfield 10, Beechwood 11). Mayfield has won 13 consecutive Regional titles and last state crown was in 2010. Beechwood won it all last back in 2008. In their last eight outings this season, the Cardinals have not given up more than 14 points in a contest. Beechwood has won eight of their last nine games.

 

MAYFIELD’S KEYS TO VICTORY: Staying balanced on offense and not relying in on the passing game too much. Let the run set up Guhy and not straying from that will be huge in putting points on the board against a Tigers defense that is prone to give up some numbers versus skilled offenses. Defensively they have to rattle the young Beechwood quarterback and keep Nussbaum in front of them at all times.

 

BEECHWOOD’S KEYS TO VICTORY: For Nussbaum and his senior classmates who have never beaten Mayfield they must erase/block out what has happened in the past against the Cardinals and focus on the here and now. The Tigers weren’t supposed to be here after what happened with suspensions three weeks. This team has thrived in the underdog role. That might just help them play more loosely and not being uptight could serve them very well.

Honestly, it may not happen like that, but, I do think it'll be a close game in the 1st half with Mayfield taking control in the 3rd qtr and BWood making a late rally in the 4th that falls just short..

If you win the opening toss, what would you do if you were each team? Based on what I am reading about Mayfield above and in game threads, I defer and take the second half kickoff. If I am Beechwood, I think I take the opening kickoff and try to get on top.

This is a pretty ignorant statement. First, he wouldnt' be where he is without allowing to develop gradually amongst kids his own age. He simply wasn't ready for Varsity in August. Second, if he was moved up earlier, there's a pretty good chance he would not have made any difference, he likely would have been beaten down discouraged early on and had his confidence broken. That would have had multi-season repercussions and wasn't worth the Risk. The truth is we will never know what might have been. What we do know for sure at this point is tha, no matter how this ends, he has had a great experience this year that carry him forward into his long career. He was a part of what one of the greatest freshmen teams in BW history. He folow that up by stepping up and having a significant impact in 3 post season varsity games. It doesn't get any better than that. So don't question it and interject your "What If" and "Too Bad" scenarios.

 

Do you just think you are that much smarter than the coaches? Do you can see something they didn't? They not only had the chance to move him up in August and chose not to, but also when they lost Lane early in the season and chose to use Suchanek and Nussbaum. We will never know why, but I'm certain they evaluated and made what they feel is the right decision.
