Tigers overcome adversity for state berth

The Beechwood Tigers have been able to overcome many different kinds of adversity this season. Now, an old nemesis stands between the Tigers and the program’s first state championship game since 2008.

 

Some of the adversity has been self-inflicted. Fifteen players were suspended and three were dismissed from the team following alleged violations of team rules at a party Oct. 27.

 

Those penalties could have derailed a team that was already dealing with an injury to senior quarterback Cameron Lane. Lane’s injury forced senior running back Max Nussbaum to take over the quarterbacking duties until freshman Kyle Fieger was ready to assume the position. All Fieger has done in his first three starts as Beechwood’s quarterback is lead his team to three playoff victories by an average margin of victory of 35 points per game.

 

Fieger has completed 23 of 33 passes for 533 yards since being handed the reins of the offense. Most importantly, he has a 9-0 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In the Class 1A regional final on Nov. 16, all Fieger had to do was manage the game. Nussbaum put on a performance for the ages, doing just about everything he could to extend his senior season for at least another week.

 

Nussbaum rushed 34 times for 157 yards and four touchdowns and caught two passes for 81 yards and a score. He also intercepted a pass on defense and added a 52-yard punt, as the Tigers defeated Frankfort, 35-13.

 

Now, Beechwood (9-4) has to overcome an obstacle that has stood between the Tigers and the state championship game each of the past three seasons.

 

Mayfield (12-1) has ended Beechwood’s playoff run in the state semifinals in three straight seasons. In last year’s 19-14 loss, Nussbaum was held to just 3.5 yards per carry on 31 rushes. The workhorse will try to put the team on his back this year. It helps that he has a confident, fearless freshman to hand him and throw him the ball.

 

Beechwood hosts Mayfield at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23. The winner advances to the Class 1A state championship to take on the winner of the Hazard/Fairview game.

Are there any stats on strength of schedule between the two teams as records and scoring margins don't really tell us a lot. Does anyone even try to calculate that for high school football?

My favorite part about playoffs is that none of this crap matters. Won't say they are a completely different team, but the Tigers certainly are a different team from most of what their record reflects.

 

How would these numbers have looked against Hazard in the finals last year?

Stats mean zero....there have been plenty of good teams on all levels that did not have eye popping stats and won championships. Comparing scores and opponents the same; its a waste of time. In HS and especially at the 1A level its the role or secondary players that make the difference. BW has numerous underclassmen that are maturing rapidly. I think they make the difference in this game.

All 100% meaningless. You can twist/breakdown those #'s anyway you want. They have zero to do with either team on 11-23-12.

It was a fun game to watch. Mayfield played hard. Beechwood should have put the game away early. As I stated..squandered opportunitys (many). Beechwood should not have put their self in the position to have to score on their final drive. They were much the best that day and could not overcome the tough effort of the Cards. Beechwood stays out of their own way ? They win this one.

 

 

So if I understand this right, Mayfield rushes for 178 yards, passes for 93, turns it over 3 times and holds the Tigers to under 100 net yards rushing and under 100 passing - But Beechwood was the best team.

 

Tough to back up that observation.

How many Mayfield rushing yards were on plays perfectly defended by Beechwood yet Jackson broke tackles or made cuts that made it positive yards? How many tackles did Jackson make on plays where his speed and ability stopped what would have been big gains? Those are the things that don't show up in stats. Jackson is a special player and every Mayfield fan who watched last year's state title game should not need anyone to point out what a huge difference maker he is on both sides of the ball.

I may agree with you when it comes to social, industrial or medical stats. But HS football ? Give me a break !

How many Mayfield rushing yards were on plays perfectly defended by Beechwood yet Jackson broke tackles or made cuts that made it positive yards? How many tackles did Jackson make on plays where his speed and ability stopped what would have been big gains? Those are the things that don't show up in stats. Jackson is a special player and every Mayfield fan who watched last year's state title game should not need anyone to point out what a huge difference maker he is on both sides of the ball.

 

I'm not disputing how important Jackson was to last years game, he was huge, but, at least Mayfield had other guys who was making plays offensively..Higginson had 5-6 receptions, other receivers caught a few passes, Ross made some decent runs in short yardage.. The Tigers, with exception of 1 pass play, had no offense at all except for what Nussbaum gave them, especially after there QB went out..Without either for the whole game, it may have been a 7-0 game and I think Mayfield had a few more offensive weapons and would have been the one with 7.. The other RB for BWood, who got all the hype coming in, was a non factor thruout and although Jackson did make plays on D, the whole defense played well, not just JJ..
