Simon Kenton's Cam Racke kicked off of and then reinstated to the Simon Frosh Team

Featured Replies

I agree with SK dropping him from the frosh team. Let a player who will be at SK get the minutes and experience. Everyone needs to do what they feel is right for them. If Racke and his family feel CCH is right for him, then CCH is where he should go. If Racke is leaving, then SK needs play other kids and do what is best for them. There should be no hard feelings on either side. Do what you feel is right and move forward.

But what if he went to the Open House, parents and the player have yet to make up their mind on where to attend school next year? Sounds like the SK staff made the decision to go to CCH that much easier.

Agreed. I am assuming the decision is made. If the decision isn't made, then there has to be a good heart to heart discussion with the kid and his parents. If they say they haven't made up their mind, then I would probably let the kid play freshman ball if he is good enough and hope he builds friendships and a desire to stay at SK. If you are making the move just because he went to the open house and you haven't talked with him, then it sounds like a temper tantrum. If that is the case, then it is time to grow up and be professional.

This is a prime example of why having kids play up to high school teams while in middle school is a bad situation.

I understand situations where middle school kids are needed to fill out a roster or to help form the team. But situations where kids are played up and displace other kids from having an opportunity is not right.

In this situation, Racke plays up at SK - at a minimum he takes playing time away from a current SK frosh and quite possibly there is a current SK frosh that is cut to make room for him. If he then decides to attend another school the damage is done.

The discussion in the football forum concerning VonHandorf is the same. A current tuition paying VMA player will have their varsity time limited and a tuition paying upperclassmen will be cut so a non-tuition paying[8th grader can play this year and then transfer to CCH for football next year.

I thought the Boone Co School system had a policy that didn't allow basketball play ups - not sure if it still is in place. I am in favor of this.

What is the alternative? Let someone whose commitment is insincere occupy roster spots in multiple sports displacing others who are committed to the program? Did we not just go through this last year? Coaches who make next to nothing while investing 100s of hours per year of time are not fond of developing their competition.

Cam will be playing freshman basketball for SK this year. However, he will not be playing JV which he likely would have had this CCH decision not been looming.

I believe, it is in the best interest of any and all students and/or athletes to explore all their options when it comes to attending high school. Cam and his family did nothing wrong. This is all on SK.

In my opinion, SK had to options: 1) allow Cam to play up, build relationships with the coaches, players, students, etc., at SK and hope that he wants to stay in the program and attend SK (similiar to what VOR stated). 2) throw a fit about an 8th grader about attending an open house with his friends and back the family into a corner to force them to choose.

SK chose the second option, which was the wrong decision in my opinion. Cam went to the CCH open house with a couple buddies from his AAU basketball team and their families becasue they were going to the open house.

What's the big deal with that?

Way to go SK, when you try to bully kids and their families, you lose!!!!

Good Luck Cam and Go Colonels!!!

Players and parents try to bully coaches as well.

Perhaps, but definitely not in this case.

It is my understanding that he is still getting the opportunity to play up on the freshmen team.

I applaud the staff at SK for making a tough call and setting a precedent. The best teams are family and you have to be all in to take advantage of the privilege of playing up. They are giving him a great opportunity to play up at the frosh level and get additional exposure to the way they do things at SK.

I would never to play any middle school athlete up at any level unless I was 100% sure they were committed to my program. By choosing to attend an open house that shows me that they were less than 100% committed to SK. Family can't have it both ways and want the student athlete to have this great opportunity to play up but still be out there exploring other options.

I think it is a good call by Coach Steiner and his staff.

Hope for the best while try to be convincing that SK is where he wants to be. Is SK going to make sure every kid on their team is coming back the following year and if the kid isn't sure then cut him too?

If this young man is anything like my kids when they were 8th graders (or I was at that age) what they want to do is subject to change....(about every 15 minutes). If I felt strongly about my program, I would invite the player to participate at whatever level he can. Even if he were considering another program. I would have a year to get his mind right about where he ought to play. If, after a year, he goes in a different direction, so be it. No hard feelings. I would wish him the best.

When I was in high school a classmate of mine, Mark Schloemer, had a younger brother who was going to play up on Holmes' freshman team as an 8th grader. He was then going to follow his older brother on to Cov. Cath's team. Doug played on Holmes freshman team as an 8th grader. He went on to play 4 more years for the Bulldogs, was voted Mr. Basketball in Kentucky his senior year and but for the worst missed call in the history of the Sweet 16 (net wrapped around Charles Hurt's hand) would have led them to a state championship.

It is my understanding that he is still getting the opportunity to play up on the freshmen team.

I think it's pretty weak. My kid is in 7th grade and currently lives with his mother and plays for the 7th and 8th grade teams. There is a strong possibility he'll be moving in with me and switching schools next year and this is known at his school as well. I wish, I repeat, I wish they would try to take that out on my kid and not allow him to play with the 8th grade team. I'll admit that my situation is likely different than this situation but if your are going to ask a middle schooler to play up and then rescind it because he attended an Open House at another school then you need to re-evaluate who you are asking up and why but you should still honor that commitment. We require our kids to honor commitments. We should expect no less from adults.

Unfortunately, the converse is not true. Not all programs are in a position to be able to market themselves to athletes beyond their districts.
