My wife has lost it

Featured Replies

The diamond in her engagement ring, that is. Came home late Saturday afternoon and she was all upset. Had just realized an hour or so earlier that the stone in the center of her wedding band/engagement ring was missing. We looked around, but with an entire day nearly having gone by, and the fact that she had done dishes, taken a bath, done laundry, gone to the library and grocery store, etc...there were just too many possibilities as to where it may have come out.

So, the question is...now what? My insurance agent had always told us to write down and document what jewelry we had, just in case anything was ever stolen. I doubt the policy covers "lost". And with a $500 deductible, I'm not so sure I'd want to cover that AND see a possible increase in our premiums because we now had a claim. Be better off to just pay for the whole thing out of pocket, and not report it.

Which brings me to the final question...where's the best place to go to find a replacement? She has no desire to replace her wedding ring ensemble, so we're just looking for a stone. I'd assume any of the local jeweler chains could do it...but, I feel they've already got me once when I bought the ring 17 years ago. On the other hand, I don't want to deal with Vinnie down on the corner, either.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

Make sure you benefit off of this incident. Use it, because you know she would/will in the future if the tables were turned.

Start praying to St. Anthony, patron saint of lost things. Works for me.

Well, I'd first ask your agent exactly what you just asked on here and see what his/her answers are. If you decide it's better to just replace the diamond, though, the two best places in NKY are Boyle Jewelers in Elsmere (just purchased an engagement ring there a handful of months ago...great little family owned business), or Clevels & Lonnemann in Bellevue - another nice little family-owned operation. Both are perfectly qualified, and are absolutely competitive with pricing.

I got our rings at Koop Diamond Cutters in downtown Cincy. My family had done some business with them and highly recommended them. I went to a few jewelers, and I felt most comfortable with them. They were very reasonably priced, and it also didn't hurt that by having the rings shipped to KY, I avoided paying sales tax. Granted, that was a while ago, so I'm sure things have changed. IMO, I'd go with a long standing, family run business before dealing with a chain jeweler.

We usually go to Schultz and Sons in Ft. Mitchell, although I liked the older generation who retired more than the young son who took over.

I have heard great things about Boyles in Elsmere.

In the future, make sure your wife has her rings checked by a jeweler every couple years. Those prongs wear out, get bent and need occasional repair and replacement to prevent losing the diamond

I would definitely stay away from big name jewelers. Local family run places are the best.

This is your best bet, quality goods and knowledgable. What ever you do, DO NOT go to a any jewelery store like at the mall, their mark-up is close to 300% to 400% and it's all junk.

A typical homeowner's policy covers up to $1500-$2500 for a lost ring and that's it. Unless you had a special rider. Use a private diamond broker to find something VVS1 or better at a reasonable price.

It is unlikely that your homeowners insurance policy would cover the loss of a stone from the ring. Most homeowners insurance polices cover your personal property on a named peril basis, which means that the loss or damage would have to be due to a peril that is specifically listed in the policy such as fire, theft, etc. (theft of jewelry is normally limited to $1,000) You can get an endorsement added to your policy which gives you open perils coverage on your personal property. Open perils means that the personal property items are insured against all forms of loss except for what is specifically excluded in the policy. This type of coverage on personal property items is not that common.

Another way to insure the ring for loss of a stone, is to have the item "scheduled" on the policy for a specific limit. This is done with an inland marine coverage endorsement. This will give you coverage on the ring for all risks of loss except for what is specifically excluded. With regards to the ring you would have coverage for theft, loss, or mysterious disappearance. Normally this type of coverage is not subject to a deductible.

All that being said, insurance differ somewhat from company to company and there are numerous endorsements that can be added to the policy which modify coverage. Even if you do not think that you ultimately want to make a claim, I would suggest that you at least contact your agent and find out what type of coverage you have, so that you will be better informed to make a decision as to how to proceed.

If you have any desire to travel to Louisville, one of my friends is Davis Jewelers. Well, Ashley is my friend. She's the buyer for her family's business. They are very high quality.

Swinford Jewelers in Erlanger is a family owned business that has been around for a long time. We've had settings replaced as well as prongs fixed at a very reasonable price.

Exactly why I went to Boyle. I stopped in Schultz and Sons first, told him my budget and the style I was looking for, and then he tried to talk me into buying something that was THREE times my budget. When I told him he was barking up the wrong tree, he looked at me in the eye and actually said, "Well isn't she worth it to you?" I told him what I thought of him and walked out the door.

I trust Boyles. Have had good quality and good service from them.

Listen. I have been to almost every jewelery store in the NKY area. (long story, i'd rather not explain, haha!) and there is nothing that compares with Kent Jester at Klasse manufacturing in Florence. I take everyone i know there, and will trumpet how awesome they are until the day i die. no one nicer, more precise and better priced. he and his whole staff are awesome.

This exact same thing happened to my wife about 2 years after we got married. She woke up one morning and the diamond was gone. We tore the bed apart, searched the floor on our hands and knees and found nothing. My mom in law mentioned St Anthony, and said she'd pray to him. 2 days later, just when we were getting ready to go look for a new diamond, she completely emptied the diaper bag looking for something else, and wouldn't you know it, the missing diamond was sitting at the bottom of the bag.
