Least You Can Do For a WWII Vet

Featured Replies

So I rolled into the bar tonight prior to the football game. Pretty crowded but I found a seat at the far end . Old-timer sitting next to me. He joked that I had better not be making a lot of noise.

We got to talking. I had him pegged at about 70 . Maybe 75. He told me he retired from American Airlines and had been there the first day the airport opened in Boone County. We were talking about something and he said "I started after the war. No I started BEFORE the war." I asked him how old he was . 90! I told him him wore it well. Said he comes to the bar most nights and has a glass or two of wine. We talked about people we knew in Hebron for a while. He told me he flew 27 missions in WWII. Said of the 10 in his crew only 2 are alive today. Teared up a bit as he told me.

He called the bartender over to pay his bill. I told him to put his cash away and that it would be my honor to pay his bill. I suspect the conversation was nice for him than me covering his tab.

Highlight of my night.

Where can I buy this guy a drink Clyde? Veterans day is coming up, thinking I'm of ordering lunch for the guys I work with. It's a holiday that I realized of late I probably don't recognize as much as I'd like to.

He seems to be a regular at Brew Haus Pizza in Hebron.

Good stuff Clyde.

I've had my differences with you, Clyde. But in my mind, all that is gone now. I salute them; but I also salute you for your kindness.

Their going too fast.

Kudos Clyde. You know how I feel about vets from prior threads. This is an example we should all emulate. We need to look out for opportunities like this to present themselves to us

Bluto,

1. You're probably on a long list.

2. To be honest, I don't remember them so it obviously never got personal so it's all good.

3. I may be opinionated and not go with the flow but most will tell you I'm a good cat.

4. I'll always take care of my elders.

5. Thanks for your kind words.

Let me reiterate. It's not like I spent a lot of money buying the guy drinks (although I would have). My point is that these guys not only deserve our respect they deserve our time and attention.

Funny story.

The guy was a manager for American Airlines at CVG. He was telling me "how times have changed" stories.

Once in the 60s the Cincy Zoo was sending a baby chimp to be on the Carson show. They came to him about transporting the chimp. He said to put him in a dog carrier. Zoo said it can't happen. So they took the person that was transporting the chimp to an office, gave him a big blanket to put over the chimp, and told him to carry it on like a baby. Problem is the chimp stuck his arm out of the blanket and scared the heck out of some lady next to him.

He also said a polevaulter was going to a competition and the way the luggage entrance was set up the pole wouldn't fit in there. So they opened a window in the cockpit and slid it through and ran the pole down the aisle. Passengers had to step over the pole as they were walking down the aisle.

Good stuff Clyde!

That's great, Clyde. Good stuff. :notworthy:

If you happened to get a name, pm me. I'd love for him to come talk to my AP US History class.

I love WWII Vets and Sat that there are so few left out there.

Good form Clyde.
