May 20, 201313 yr I've enjoyed bourbon for many years. My personal favorites: High end ($50 a fifth): Pogue's. $30-a-fifth: Pure Kentucky XO and Eagle Rare. Mid-priced: Ancient Ancient Age (10 years old) and Evan Williams Single Barrel. Low-priced mixer: Evan Williams. Best bargain brand ($10 a fifth): white label Heaven Hill. Good luck finding it. May 20, 201313 yr One of the best bourbon's I've had, was a VERY old bottle of Maker's Mark. Back in late 80s, my brother-in-law and I were hired to retrieve some items and liquor and wine from the old Club Araby nightclub in Covington, Ky (Some of you old-timers will remember the place) on Russell between Pike and 6th, near the old train depot. When we walked into that place, it looked like time standing still. No one had been in it since the day it closed up in 1968. There were still bottles on tables, beer and pop bottles in the cooler cases, ash trays everywhere, cigarettes still in some machines, even some coats and jackets hanging up that were apparently forgotten. Anyway, we made our way to what looked like a vault and when we opened it up, it was a room full of wine and liquor. I was permitted to keep a bottle of Maker's Mark, seal unbroken, had been stored in brick lined "vault" and no light. Don't remember how old the Maker's was but add over 20 more years to it's storage....... Yes, we tried it, apprehensively at first but it was fine, VERY fine!
May 21, 201313 yr Anyone else tried Town Branch? I picked up a bottle a few weeks back, and I'm fairly impressed. It's on the sweet side of things, and has some fairly strong vanilla notes to it. For what it's worth, a kinda cool looking bottle too, I think. It just was introduced in 2012, and also has had the Lexington distillery added to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. As I understand it, the owners of the Kentucky Ale brewery had been having so much success with their Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale that they realized instead of buying used bourbon barrels from distilleries to age their beer in, they should just go ahead and make their own bourbon, sell the bourbon, and then use the barrels themselves. The last time I ventured into The Party Source one of their employees told me it was his new favorite.

June 15, 201313 yr A few of us USF boosters are having a bourbon tasting party tonight. I'm bringing my Blanton's and bottle of 46, along with something I found yesterday, when looking for a Pappy Van Winkle. It's simply called "Lexington", bottled in Bowling Green. BTW, you can't find Pappy Van Winkle anywhere down here. I talked to the guy who owns the liquor store I go to and he said they keep it on order, but they have a waiting list. As soon as a shipment shows, they're already spoken for. I got on the waiting list.

A fella at the shindig tonight said he'd seen Pappy 20 year going for $300-$400 a 5th on eBay. I've had a shot or 2 of Pappy 20 and while it is really good, I ain't that good.
June 16, 201313 yr Just my opinion, but the "Lexington" was just OK. Not something to write home to Mom about. It was almost, too light or like it didn't age long enough. Got my first taste of Woodford's Double Oak. OMG!!! That is some smooooooooooooooooth bourbon. I like it! Tried Willet's Single Barrel for the first time, too. That was good. Sampled several others, as well. I'm afraid I'm a bit to ... "tipsy" to remember them all right at the moment.
