May 22, 201412 yr I stopped by the liquor store to get a growler filled last night, and they had a case of Barterhouse Bourbon, a 20 year old bourbon put out by Diageo as part of their "Orphan Barrel" series. I'm assuming these are just aged varieties of either Bulleit Bourbon or IW Harper, seeing as those are the only two bourbons that Diageo have in their production. The store was asking $89 per bottle. I might just have to give it a try. They also apparently are selling a bottle 26 year called Old Blowhard. Sells for around $200 per bottle. Fell madly in love with the Craig 18, especially once I figured out the secret about it. Was amazingly able to get singles of that stuff for $7 and doubles for $9 at one of my places until I finally finished off my hidden bottle there. My old man still has enough for about two more drinks out of the Father's Day bottle I got him a few years ago. I like the Craig 20, but I like the 18 a little more. The 20 is outstanding, though.
May 23, 201412 yr I've had the EC 18 previously but I don't believe they make it any longer. Nope. That price that CWB had next to it was a major mistake by HH that cost them a fortune. That stuff should've been sold for about $90-100 a bottle based on how they were taxed on it.

I can't recall when, but at some point recently I had someone telling me that the TTB or Kentucky, or maybe both...I can't remember exactly...was looking at revising their excise tax procedures to ease up on the liquor producers who barrel age their liquors and lose product to evaporation. Anyone able to confirm or deny? (For those who may not understand, current law has the excise taxes being paid on the amount of bourbon that goes into the barrels at the beginning of the aging process - not the lesser amount that comes out at the end of aging. Thereby, the older the bourbon, the more that is lost to evaporation, and the higher the cost because of the excise tax that still has to be paid on the evaporated bourbon.)

I personally think it's easier to start in on the sweeter bourbons - Makers Mark being one of them. Another good one to give a try would be Town Branch. It's a fairly sweet one that goes down smooth with a LOT of vanilla notes to it. Roundabout $25 or $26 for a 750mL. Solid bourbon. Elmer T. Lee is also a bit on the sweeter side (although not so much as Town Branch), but it will set you back closer to $30 or $35.
