Ryle cancels series against Highlands!!!

I agree with this 100%. IF Dale backed out and his reasons were not valid, I don't think ANYONE on here would support that. My feeling is that we aren't getting all of the story! I believe you 100% that he backed out. You don't have to convince me of that. I don't have to ask any coaches at this point. You, along with the other poster, have convinced me. However, I don't know Dale's side of the story as to "why". I find it very hard to believe there weren't some factors that led to that decision that either you know and aren't sharing or just have no clue other than what other coaches told you. Don't you think there are coaches out there that would love to drill the best coach and program in NKY. Don't you think there is a possibility they only heard/translated what THEY heard in the meeting. Even the other poster admitted that one coach mentioned a "huge misunderstanding". Just that alone lends doubt to the context in which you are putting it. You also snuck in (later in the conversation) that Dale made an offer to pull his kids out of eligibility for the scholarship. When you first started this stuff, that wasn't mentioned until we pinned you against the wall about facts. What else to you know that you're not telling us that is in favor of Dale??

No doubt at this point he backed out. Yippie, you convinced us. But no reason or facts behind "why". Dale would never make a decision that had an impact on any kids, without it being well thought out and unselfish. If you can PROVE otherwise, I'll eat the crow (UK#1 shout out), apologize and admit I was wrong.

Are you saying I was trying to hide that his kid lost a scholarship? What is a $1000 that was lost to that kid vs. the thousands that he is taking out of the fund from the gate vs. Trinity. His reasoning was that his gate is down due to NKY teams not playing him out of district. He is claiming that the program needs the money, so he can't give it to the scholarship fund. Yippie........He makes decisions that benefit Highlands over his obligations to the scholarship fund and the association.

I am just curious, what were the prices charged at the gate for the Potter games? Is it the same at each location? Just trying to gather some facts.

The locations are supposed to charge at minimum $5 per adult and $3 per student, but most charge their gate price if it is more.

You hate to see this, no matter what the reason.

His word??? Have you ever changed your mind on a decision? Games are changed all the time in the coaching world before contracts are signed. Not giving a gate to a scholarship fund when you had promised to do so is not common. I am glad that there are some posters that have a problem with it, but there are many that obivously see any decision made by Dale to be great and "good for the kids and program." There is no doubt in my mind that he thinks keeping that gate is good for the program. However, his reasoning was that no NKY teams play him out of district so his gates are down. Keeping the money from that gate is not the way to make it up.

It is amazing the lengths you will go to to try and justify Warner's word not being worth anything. Come on, you can say it. It's ok, we all know it.

Warner has never lied to me. If you think his word is worth nothing then you are sadly mistaken. Setting up a game and canceling before contract is not breaking your word. Game scheduling is not concrete until the contract is SIGNED. That is why games are done under contract. Is a coach that cancels a JV game for one reason or another "breaking his word?"

Okay. Are passes accepted? Is there some sort of sign or bucket for fans to make contributions to the fund? Again just trying to understand and determine facts.

Come on everybody, I think this stuff is getting a little out of hand. It seems that most of the posters for this thread are NKY'ians and it doesn't do anybody any good to have two NKY programs (Highlands and Ryle) excessively run down on this site, based on speculation and hearsay.

I know that very recently Highlands was having trouble filling out a 10-game schedule and Ryle agreed to play Highlands twice in a year for two years straight. That was a pretty big thing to do, in my opinion, since Highlands was pretty strong in 2009 and 2010, and surely the Ryle coach/administration knew the odds were long for Ryle winning these games (they ended up going 1-3 vs. HHS). As a HHS fan I appreciated Ryle's willingness to do this. It seems that the Ryle coaches now think it's in Ryle's best interest not to play HHS for the time being. This matter is between Coach Mueller and Coach Warner, and they should be the ones to sort the matter out. In terms of the Tom Potter Classic, that matter is between Coach Mueller, the other NKY coaches and the event organizers.

I hope both Ryle and Highlands are able to schedule good opponents for next year, and hope that both programs do well in the future. I also hope the Tom Potter Classic is successful in the future (although I'm afraid I know very little about this scholarship fund).

No on the passes, yes on the bucket.

I heard Dale needed the money to make some cake! :D

No on the passes, yes on the bucket.

Shouldn't there be a particpation agreement for this Tom Carter Classic series? Seems to me that there would be some form of agreement for participation in this "Tom Potter Classic" as well. If not, shame on the organizers. Bet nothing was signed for that either. Honestly, I have never even heard of this "classic". At the HHS v Trinity game, there was no signage, no "bucket" and pass's were accepted. Seems to me that there was a huge misunderstanding and this funds cash cow decided not to particpate. Now we have sour grapes. At this point what is done is done. HHS needs to find another opponent for next year and RHS needs to find someone that can generate a large amount of cash for a scholarship fund. Pretty simple.

This has not been done by a contract. It has been a verbal agreement for a charity in Tom's name.

No on the passes, yes on the bucket.

Okay, now I am going to give you facts that I know about the scrimmage with Trinity. About 2 weeks before the contest, the Ft. Thomas Schools website announced the time of the game with Trinity and that it would cost $ 6 for adults and $ 4 for students which would be okay based upon what you stated. The announcement went on to state that passes would also be accepted, so I purchased a family pass at the HHS Bookstore which gets me and my family in to all sporting events at Highlands. I can tell you that the announcement made no mention of this game being a part of the Potter Classic nor was there any indication (signs, collection bucket, etc.) at the gate when I arrived.

Given all of these facts, I can tell you with all honesty that I was not aware at any time that this scrimmage with Trinity was associated with the Potter Classic in any way shape or form. I also do not remember reading anything on this very website mentioning that this game was a part of the Classic.

It is for many of these very reasons that Fort Thomas faithful have a hard time buying that HHS made some sort of financial commitment to the fund. My money went to the school via a check for my passes, so no money went into the till for the scholarship fund. It would appear on the surface that there was some sort of misunderstanding between all of the parties involved, but I know for a fact this had absolutely nothing to do with Ryle's decision to cancel this game.

As I said earlier, each team will find an opponent to fill out there schedule and a week from now all of this will have been forgotten. Good luck to the Raiders and the Birds this week as they begin their quest for a championship.

I would doubt that anyone that was at that meeting would call it a misunderstanding. I know that both of the head coaches I spoke to on the matter did not.

To be fair, you know, just like I do, that a whole lot of football coaches (not all, but a lot) are like a bunch of old wash women when it comes to gossiping, repeating rumors, etc. Don't know if such is the case in this issue, but having been on the BOC for two terms and listened to a lot of football coaches say this and say that, when the truth wasn't even close, leads me to listen with a rather suspicious ear to what coaches say. I could give ample examples of such, some of which involve N. Ky coaches, but I won't. Some coaches I'd take to the bank what they told me; others not so much. As you also know, there are some in the N. Ky coaching community that simply do not like Dale, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least if what you were told may have been distorted (again, I could give more examples but I won't). I'm not saying what you were told by the two coaches is false, as I don't know the facts. But I do know from many, many personal experiences to be rather cautious when I listen to what certain coaches say.

So let's dig into that. Were there previous discussions with the association regarding HHS' support with regards to an understanding that other NKY teams would play them in the future?? Were there discussions if HHS' money was down, they could back out? What were the terms of the deal? Committments from each team? Did the association commit to money, assuming HHS was "in"? Was it HHS commiting to the fund or the association that HHS is a part of and Dale decided that he couldn't afford to pay his share this year because his dollars are down. Like you said, people change their mind!

If I am running a football team in this economy, I'm sure I have to watch the dollars. If Dale has tried to get teams to play him from NKY without success and no cooperation, then that forces him to do other things to fill his schedule. That means that he has to travel to play teams that will play him. That is very expensive. And it cuts down on his revenue when teams travel here because teams don't bring as many fans as a local team would. Times that by 10 games and that's a huge hit to a program. I don't think people understand what kind of impact it has on HHS when no one local will play them.

If I face a decision in my personal life to pay an electric bill or give to charity, I know where my money is going! I may have committed to the charity, but at the end of the day when I sit down to count my money, the money just doesn't add up. That means that I will pay the electric bill and take care of my family. Contrary to MOST beliefs, HHS gets very little state money for funding, compared to other state schools. Yes, boosters step in and help on occasions. But it is the coaches responsibility to make sure they do their best to stay on budget. Booster money is a luxery and not guaranteed.

At the end of the day, when you don't have the same income that you felt you would have, you have to prioritize what you pay. This is what this is starting to sound like.

Does it stink for the association that they can't give the same amount of money or scholarships? Yes...but mama always taught me to look out for number 1 because noone else will!
