SK looks to be a force running the ball. SK's best receivers(11 Swanson and 8Wilson) from last year are playing only defense this year. If SK keeps running the ball like they have they don't need them on offense. But if you put those 2 players on offense SK will have be a real good passing team. SK came from behind and got the win you have to love that! Beechwood played pretty good. Took me a while to figure out what number Justice was #30 he played a lot. I hope Beechwood takes 1A![/QUO

 

Huesman is the best receiver bar none. Not healthy enough tonight to break up interception at the end of the first half but don't think Beechwood didn't know where he was. Opened the field up a bit for others. Great job by Sampson running up hill instead trying to break outside.

They are a sellout defense. They like to crowd the line of scrimmage and blitz a lot. Beechwood did not do enough in the passing game to make that hurt.

Then, to SK's credit, they had enough speed to keep the Tiger running backs from getting to the corner when they bounced it outside. Beechwood needs to keep working on the passing game if they want state title #12.

I think we may have another good one behind center for 20+ more games.

The Tigers were much improved over the scrimmages and I was very pleased how Tigers played. They were in position to win it late in the fourth quarter. Just didn't happen. Although Max would help tremendously on offense (time of possession, keeping the ball away from SK) he was missed more on defense last night. Not sure anyone blitzes as good as he does. That could have slowed down the sk offense a little bit.

 

Loved the fake punt call on your own 10 yard line. Cojones Grandes!

Spot on VOR. BW abandoned the passes in the second half that seemed to have an effect in the first half and those were the quick hitters. Example was the pass to Lightner over the middle. Lane shows mobility but it seemed that with SK's size and speed someone was always waiting for him. Nice job by SK in adjusting at the half.

 

It was a hard fought game in the heat by both squads. Credit the coaches and the players on both sides. It would have been easy to take a play off here and there but I did not see that happen. It would be comforting to say that a 1A team hung in there with a 6A team but it was winnable game for the Tigers. Regardless of class there was talent on both sides of ball and with expereinces like this game, BW should be just fine.

Good reflection on BW's future then since they only lost by 4 and sans the fumble by Lane at the end had a chance to win the game.

Let's start this the right way and try to have a good thread on the game. Here is your game story.

 

It was an entertaining ballgame tonight in Independence. It was hot but I did not see that having much impact on the game. No one cramped up and both teams showed no signs of fatigue on the field.

 

Beechwood had the ball first and went 3 and out. Swanson had a nice return of about 15 yards on the punt to give Simon Kenton good field position at the 50 for their first drive. They moved down field inside the ten before the Beechwood defense toughened up and stopped the drive. The 24 yard field goal attempt was blocked by Erdman. Beechwood put together a nice drive highlighted by a key 3rd down pass from Lane to Lightner but Beechwood's drive also was stopped when they got inside the ten. However, Sletto was able to convert the field goal from about 20 yards and the Tigers took a 3-0 lead. That is how things stood at the end of the first quarter.

 

The second quarter started with Simon Kenton going 3 and out. Then the punter could not handle the snap and Beechwood recovered the ball at the 10 yard line. The Tigers could not seize the opportunity. They were forced to try the field goal and it went just wide to the right from 21 yards. Simon Kenton was energized by the miss and put together a nice drive behind some solid running by Sampson and a big pass by Kuntz to Franzen (sorry if I misspell some of these SK names as I did not have their roster). A couple plays later, Beechwood blew a coverage and Kuntz lobbed an easy TD pass of 28 yards to Wasserman (SP?) who just stood there and waited for it to fall into his hands in the end zone. No Tiger was within 10 yards of him. With 6:37 to go in the half, SK had the lead at 7-3. It didn't last long. On Beechwood's first offensive play after the kickoff, Lane hit Lightner in stride 20 yards down field and Lightner took it to the end zone for a 67 yard TD pass. Beechwood goes right back on top at 10-7. Simon Kenton picked up a couple first downs on their next possession but Beechwood stopped the drive. Simon Kenton punted from their 45 and Beechwood took over around their own 20. Beechwood seemed confused on offense and called a timeout. Suchanek came in at QB after the timeout and ran the spread read option perfectly to go 44 yards. Beechwood mixed it up well and moved down field with Erdman taking it 18 yards untouched through the right side for the TD. Beechwod 17-7 with 2:00 to go. Simon Kenton picked up one first down then tried a long pass on their last possession of the half and it was intercepted by Shover at the 16. Halftime Beechwood 17-7.

 

The play of the game happened on the second half kickoff. Swanson for Simon Kenton took the kickoff 91 yards for a TD and just like that it was a one score game. Beechwood 17 Simon Kenton 14. Beechwood went 3 and out on their first second half drive. SK picked up one first down then punted on their next drive. Beechwood did the same and with 3:18 to go in the quarter, SK started their next drive on the 48 yard line. The Pioneers used the good field position and worked their way down field, mixing up runs by Sampson and Kuntz. The yards came begrudgingly. End of the 3rd quarter with Beechwood still on top at 17-14.

 

Then right after the start of the 4th quarter, Swanson found an opening over the right side and sprinted virtually untouched into the end zone from 22 yards out to put SK in the lead at 21-17. Beechwood had a nice return on the kickoff then picked up a first down to get the ball to the 50. Facing 3rd and long, Lane overthrew his receiver and SK intercepted the ball at their own 30. SK picked up a couple first downs before Beechwood sacked Kuntz on a 3rd down play to stop the drive. SK's punter kicked an excellent punt and Beechwood started their drive at their own 10 with 4:38 to go. Two incomplete passes and no gain on a run had Beechwood punting. But Coach Rash made a gutsy call and ran a fake punt with Erdman gaining 27 yards and the first down with 3:42 to go. The Tigers were energized and on their way. They started making plays and mixing it up well with runs by Erdman, Thomas, Lane and a pass to Lightner that picked up a first down. Lane made a nice run to the 27 and lost the ball as he was being brought down by several Pioneers. SK recovered with 2:00 left and that ended the Tigers' chance. SK picked up one key 1st down before punting the ball with 8 seconds to go. The Tigers Hail Mary pass fell incomplete and the Pioneers picked up the hard fought win.

 

Nice summary....but no credit for the SK defense?
