Not on the schedule this year. A lot happens between freshman and junior years. I would caution you not to read too much into freshman results. Some programs take a purely developmental approach to freshman ball and are not really concerned too much with results. Others are ultra competitive.

Understand completely that results at the Freshman level do not have a direct correlation to success at the varsity level. However, if raw talent doesn't exist its tough to develop. I see programs take average talent and make it good, and some take good and make it great. I have yet to see a program take poor talent and make it great.

Not to take this thread down another path off topic, but the Beechwood freshman team should be a good one. Their only loss last season was to Moeller and most of the skill players on last year's team were 8th graders so they are back. They are playing with the big schools this year so we will find out how good.

However, if we want to stay on topic and talk about size, Simon Kenton definitely has the size to play with anyone. It was almost comical the size difference when the captains met at mid field pre-game. The Tigers did a great job holding their own versus the size SK had on the field.

 

Has Beechwood traditionally done this? I know they schedule bigger teams at the varsity level but didn't know if they did it with the Freshmen as well. Seems like a great idea though to help give them experience against elite talent.

Beechwood' Freshman team should be good since they picked up Stringer. Rash better find a bigger bus!

They did play with the big schools 4 years ago. You asked so I will go ahead and say it. That group won the freshman championship, easily beating Highlands at Highlands in the championship game. The next season there was a smaller school freshman league that included Beechwood, the 2A schools plus Holmes, Scott and Cooper (who was starting their program). Cooper beat Beechwood in the championship game that season. The last couple of years it has been a bit of a struggle putting together a schedule in the small school division because some of the teams had trouble fielding teams.

 

Here is the challenge for small school programs like Beechwood and New Cath. The 1A schools do not field freshman teams. I believe they field freshman/sophomore teams and no JV. Recently, the 2A schools have had trouble fielding freshman teams. Lloyd has not had a freshman team for 2 or 3 years. Newport has struggled finding players. This year Holy Cross doesn't have a freshman team. So you see the problem. Last year Beechwood freshmen played the small schools that had freshman teams and worked in a couple games against big schools, including a game against Moeller.

I can understand. They were a total unknown quantity different than other schools with existing programs and coaches. While everyone starts with new players on the freshman level, when you also have new coaches who may have no clue about the incoming players, I can see why Cooper chose this option for year one. Looking at how these kids who are now seniors are performing, it sure doesn't look like it was a bad decision.

We can disagree on this one. The one thing that was known was the enrollment. So from a numbers perspective, they should not of played down. Should of played in the large school division IMO.

Even more of a reason not to play down. Probably didn't fair to well in their first year so decided to bring it down. Varsity, I could understand, but not frosh.

And the Cooper parents wanted the big school division as well but old news. Cooper would have competed for a title with that team in the big school. I think Conner won 1 game that year so it could have been another win over Conner :clap:
